Set during the 1880s, this period drama explores a point in historical figure James Brooke’s life. Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers takes on the role of Brooke. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers To Star In French Love Story ‘Belle Du Seigneur’

“The Tudors” star Jonathan Rhy-Meyers will star opposite Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova in the French love story, “Belle Du Seigneur.”

According to Deadline, it’s the directorial debut of Glenio Bonder and it was written by James Dearden (“Fatal Attraction”) and Vincenzo Cerami (“Life Is Beautiful”) and was based on the bestselling 1968 French novel by Albert Cohen. Here’s a synopsis which will basically tell you all you need to know about the upcoming picture that shoots this October in various Euro locales:

First published in Paris in 1968, Belle du Seigneur is considered the masterpiece of Albert Cohen, a Jew who served the Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann, who became Israel’s first Prime Minister, and worked for the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees after World War II.

Take this one with a heaping dose of salt, if anything this is a studio wish-list story and the actors a) may not have been contacted yet and b) might not even be interested.

Ioan Gruffudd has done a lot of interesting films, and even been a part of some interesting ensembles, but we’re not going to go out on a limb and say he’s anything but boring as hell. As Reed Richards, the leader of the superteam in “Fantastic Four” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” he was dry, dull, and most importantly, sexless, which is a bummer when playing someone who has to be exciting enough to be Jessica Alba’s dream guy.

It’s been quiet as a mouse on the production front of Brendon Gleeson’s planned directorial debut in an adaptation of Flann O’ Brien’s “At Swim-Two-Birds” so, subsequently, we had all but assumed the project had tragically fallen through the cracks like so many others. Actor Cillian Murphy, however, has now provided an update on the film affirming that it’s definitely on track and readying to get in front cameras in the near future.

“I spoke to Brendan during the year and he’s in the process of raising money,” Murphy told IrishCentral.

Amanda Seyfried and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are set to join the previously announced cast of Glenn Close, Orlando Bloom, Michael Gambon and Janet McTeer in “Albert Nobbs.” Close will reprise her role in the film adaptation of the stage play that “is a ‘Gosford Park’-style ‘below stairs’ drama featuring Close as a woman in Nineteenth Century Ireland who disguises herself as a man in order to survive.” Filming takes place in June in Dublin with Rodrigo Garcia (“Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her”) directing.

Brendan Gleeson’s adaptation of the classic Irish novel “At Swim-Two-Birds” by Brian O’Nolan is looking to being shooting this summer after faltering in its first attempt of production.

The project will hopefully boast an all-star, all-Irish cast including the likes of Colin Farrell, Gabriel Byrne, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Cillian Murphy and Gleeson himself but, in what is indicative of the state of things, still struggled to find financing in time for a planned March shoot (and note, all these actors are all “in talks” at the moment).

Why even bother writing an In Theaters piece this week? Because this is The Playlist and dammit if we aren’t committed to our cause! Superbowl Sunday is this week, so the day’s grosses will be down, especially among males, which bodes well for “Dear John.” But can it really challenge “Avatar,” which has been the top movie for well over a month now? Time will tell, but a change could really do us good in this dry season.

So yes, if you were ever curious how far in advance the often-mysterious operating Criterion Collection schedules their DVD releases, well it now appears like almost a year away, if not more (we don’t know what else they obviously have in store).

Secondly, apparently the “August Rush” family drama about an orphaned musical prodigy movie and soundtrack (details and tracklist here) apparently charmed the pants off people and evidently some of our readers that can’t stop posting about it. Every once in a while we’ll actually care what you have to say. But we can’t necessarily endorse what looks like a sappy, saccharine, feel-good musical, but to each his own, we suppose.

August Rush Soundtrack – Because You Were Dying To Know – ‘Into The Wild’ Deluxe Edition…

OK, it’s not indie, hip or even remotely cool (or possibly even good?), but the soundtrack to the cheesy looking “August Rush” feel-good, music film comes out November 6 (“feeel the music” is one of the film’s tags). You won’t find Sufjan on it (so Stereogum won’t report it) and you won’t find Deerhunter on it (so neither will Pitchfork), but the disc does feature songs by Kaki King, who recently contributed some instrumental score music (with Michael Brooks) to Sean Penn’s “Into The Wild,” John Legend, and lots of songs sung by closeted actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers (you can hear one his songs at the movie’s myspace page).
