Who knows what’s next for P.T. Anderson? Given the director’s work rate, it’s safe to expect his follow-up to “Licorice Pizza” won’t head into production for another couple of years at least. But when it happens, could it involve a reunion between him and composer Jon Brion?  Jonny Greenwood has made the music for each of Anderson’s last five films, but before that Brion did work on three: Anderson’s 1996 debut “Hard Eight,” 1999’s “Magnolia,” and 2002’s “Punch Drunk Love.”

So, who’s to say Brion couldn’t work with the filmmaker again, even though the last time was two decades ago?

First up is a playful spot for FedEx, which imagines, as only Gondry can, what happens to all your parcels overnight before they are put onto a truck and arrive at your door.

In an interview with the Oakland Examiner (via TwentyFourBit) the actor pulls back the curtain on how the score came together, revealing that Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood sent over some files, Jon Brion (aka John O’Brien) recorded some stuff as did director John Curran, and then it was all cut and taped together into what we hear in the film:

John (Curran) and I got to talking really early on about the whole theme of Stone and how he talks about becoming a tuning fork of God and how when sound comes to you, it’s terrifying.

We saw it the picture at TIFF recently and while it starts out a little uneven initially, it does make for a sweet, come-from-behind victory. And Marcia Gay Harden is really the best thing about it, playing a mother who’s wonderfully flawed and yet still likable — sort of like all mom’s lovable, but sometimes big pains in the ass.
