The promising rookie, the come from behind victory, the underdog beating the odds, the veteran making one last stand — baseball movies usually follow a familiar pattern, and generally speaking, the genre has largely drawn from this well. They are also pictures that usually have an extra coating of nostalgia for the country’s national pastime, a reverence for the sport that has passed afternoons and evenings for decades. However, “The Phenom” is not that movie.

Generally speaking, baseball movies (and sports flicks in general) tend to follow a down-on-your-luck team or player as they wise up, overcome obstacles, and win the Big Game. Rarely does a film probe the psychological underpinnings of a rising star, but the upcoming “The Phenom” does just that, in what looks like “Whiplash” for baseball.

First Picture Of The First Picture Of The Cast Of ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’

We know, it’s kind of tame but we’ll take what we can get. Edgar Wright has posted a picture of what looks like the first official still from his upcoming “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.”

The film stars Michael Cera as the titular Scott Pilgrim who must defeat the seven evil boyfriends of Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, in order to win her hand.

Featured in this picture of a picture is Cera, Winstead, Johnny Simmons who plays Young Neil, Ellen Wong who plays Knives Chau, Alison Pill who plays Kim Pine and Mark Webber who plays Stephen Stills.

Johnny Simmons Joins The Cast: ‘The Conspirator’: Not Necessarily A 2010 Oscar Shoo-In?

We’ve heard this looong rumored and it’s basically been listed everywhere (IMDB), but not confirmed, but we’ve been told that Johnny Simmons is one the last pieces of the casting puzzle in Robert Redford’s “The Conspirator” (pictured above is Justin Long who’s grown a stache for his role as McAvoy’s one-armed best friend).

The “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” actor (who also had a part in “Jennifer’s Body”) has been cast as John Surratt, the conspiring son of Mary Surratt (Robin Wright Penn) in the film.

Courtesy of ShockTillYouDrop, here is an early red-band trailer for the upcoming Karyn Kusama helmed, Diablo Cody scribed horror-comedy “Jennifer’s Body.”

Starring Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody and Johnny Simmons, the film follows the story of a popular but demonically possessed teenager (Fox) who starts to kill off her high school classmates while her nerdy best friend (Seyfried) attempts to thwart her ill-intentioned efforts and that of the Satan-worshiping emo rock band who transformed her friend.

Sloan Helping Michael Cera’s Sex Bob-Omb Band In ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’?

Music is an integral part of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World,” graphic novel. Here’s a quick sample:

– The Scott Pilgrim name is taken from a song by the now-defunct East Coast Canadian all-girl band Plumtree
– There’s a least two bands in the books, Sex Bob-Omb and The Clash at Demonhead (both are video game references)
– Book #3 “Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness,” is an knowing nod to the Smashing Pumpkins.
