There are very few directors that can claim that they revolutionized a genre. But one could argue that John McTiernan is one of those people. In a matter of a decade, the filmmaker helmed “Predator,” “Die Hard,” “Last Action Hero” (underrated), and “Die Hard with a Vengeance” (the only decent sequel). Not to mention sandwiched in between those was “The Hunt for Red October.”

All things considered, McTiernan had a run in the ‘80s and ‘90s that set the stage for the action genre moving forward.

John McTiernan was once the king of the Hollywood action blockbuster. The director earned a reputation for making some of the best big screen spectacles of his day, with “Predator,” “Die Hard,” “The Hunt For Red October,” and “Die Hard With A Vengeance” all to his name. However, he hit a major bump in the road in the early 2000s with two major flops — “Rollerball” and “Basic” — failures that were compounded with legal and financial trouble that has essentially curtailed his career since.
