Director Brad Bird is returning to animated feature films, but won’t be heading back to Pixar. Bird previously worked with the Disney-owned animation house leading two Best Animated Feature Oscars for his work on “Incredibles” and “Ratatouille.” According to Deadline, Bird is teaming up with disgraced former Pixar head John Lasseter and Skydance Animation for an original feature film, “Ray Gunn” that the filmmaker will direct from a script he co-wrote with Matthew Robbins.

Since 2016, Pixar has released a total of five films (if you count the soon-to-be-released “Toy Story 4”). And of those five films, only one, “Coco,” is an original property not tied to a previous Pixar brand. It was only a matter of time before Skydance Animation experienced some sort of blowback from hiring ex-Pixar boss John Lasseter to head up its studio. After being accused of sexual misconduct (and receiving disciplinary action from Pixar/Disney, including his dismissal), many folks considered the hiring of Lasseter to be problematic, or at the very least, highly questionable. When John Lasseter was hired as Skydance Animation‘s new head by CEO Larry Ellison last month, there was understandable concern from inside the studio. Lasseter had left Disney‘s Pixar last year after allegations surfaced about his misconduct around female employees. Now, less than two months after his joining the company, the first big-name talent has departed a project at Skydance. Emma Thompson had already started recording her voice work for “Luck,” but The Hollywood Reporter reports in an exclusive that she left a result of her concerns about working with the now-controversial exec.

When news broke of John Lasseter stepping down from his position at the top of Pixar last November, the producer-writer-director dubbed the reasons for his leave of absence as “missteps.” He described his actions with certain employees as disrespectful and “uncomfortable.” However, no further information was given. Later, it would be speculated that these so-called “missteps” were sexual harassment claims from various female employees at Pixar.

Eventually, Lasseter returned from his six-month leave and Disney was reportedly attempting to figure out how to keep the creative head in the company.

“Newt” was scheduled to be Disney/Pixar’s big summer 2012 film and the directorial debut of visionary sound designer Gary Rydstrom (“Star Wars,” “Terminator 2,” “Minority Report,” “WALL*E”). Its plot centered around two endangered blue-footed newts. The male newt (named Newt) is trying to woo the female newt (named Brooke) through the use of an instructional chart that’s plastered on the wall (they’re in a community college science lab), but the last step of the process is obscured by a coffee pot, so Newt never knows how to, you know, seal the deal and save his species.
