In the case of FX, the cable television channel has shows airing on linear television and streaming. The formerly known FX on Hulu (a title they no longer use) is the umbrella hub for their digital counterpart after Disney acquired the network, allowing them to be one of the few places with a hybrid distribution of their shows.

He commissions his internal research team to come up with stats relating to the volume of scripted series that get released each year. And it appears that with the influx of streaming services, 2019 was yet another record-breaking year.

According to Landgraf’s research, which he presented at a recent TCA panel, 2019 features 532 scripted original series and limited series.

That’s the day that the final episode of “Atlanta” Season 2 aired on FX. And therefore, that’s also the day that the last new episode of the Emmy-winning series was released. As you might guess, the delay between Season 2 and the already-announced Season 3 has been longer than your average TV series hiatus. And according to the head of FX, there’s still about a year left before new episodes will hit TV screens.

Well, thanks to the new Disney overlords, FX is now getting the prime streaming destination it was looking for, on Hulu. And to kick things off, some of the most anticipated FX series that were coming to TVs in 2020 are now going to be exclusively streaming on the platform.

This means that the Mouse House now controls all of Hulu and will integrate the streaming service into its long-term plans, providing an option for creators that aren’t family friendly enough for Disney+. And according to the head honcho of FX, now a subsidiary of Disney, this is great news.

He’s never been shy with offering his opinion on the state of the TV marketplace, and honestly, his “takes” are pretty spot-on, most of the time. Of course, we always have to take what he says with a modicum of salt, just based on the inherent bias he carries, representing FX. However, with the recent headlines that Netflix has garnered based on their outlandish “ratings” for programs like “Sex Education,” “You,” and the film “Bird Box,” Landgraf is ready to set the record straight.”

READ MORE: FX CEO Breaks Down 4 Streaming Services That Will Dominate & Warns Of “Biggest Hangover” For TV Industry

Based on the fact that streamers like to measure the number of video starts, not the average audience, Landgraf said, at a recent TCA event (via THR), the claims by Netflix are “not remotely accurate representation of a long-form program performance.”

Bringing some data to back up his claim, Landgraf said that “You,” which Netflix has claimed to be watched by over 40 million users, isn’t the massive, world-dominating hit the streaming service would like you to believe.

With companies like Apple, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and many, many more snatching up TV series left and right, along with signing exclusive deals with creators, the future of network and cable TV is in flux. One of the rare TV CEOs talking about this change is FX’s John Landgraf.
