Deadline reports that Miramax Television emerges victorious in a steep bidding war against Blumhouse Productions and A24 for the TV rights to “Halloween.” The deal with Trancas International Films allows Miramax to develop and co-produce a TV series based on the IP, including a first-look agreement on other TV projects for the international marketplace.

Everyone has an opinion on “Barbie,” you’re in a fantastic position if everyone is talking about your film (hello, Oscars), and old, cantankerous DGAF filmmakers make for excellent copy. Like Paul Schrader, who has been in the headlines lately for his controversial opinions on Jonathan Glazer’s acclaimed “Zone of Interest” (which he called “great-ish,” but typically has some unkind things to say about it), horror filmmaker John Carpenter always speaks his mind because he’s just old and doesn’t give a f*ck (and to be fair, it’s been about three decades since Carpenter was like this at least).

However, the project has seen its fair share of developmental hiccups over the years, with it now attached to 20th Century Studios instead of New Line Cinema. But a decent update last month indicates signs of life on a potential return to Carpenter’s dystopian future America.

[Review]" align="left" style="margin: 0 20px 20px 0;max-width:100%" />
If there’s a lesson to be learned from David Gordon Green’s trilogy of “Halloween” legacy-quels, it’s to quit while you’re ahead. His 2018 “Halloween” (a direct sequel to the original 1978 masterpiece and a ret-con of its many, many follow-ups) was a surprisingly effective combination of slasher reanimation and reconsideration, taking the horrors of that Halloween night, and its psychological effects on its survivors and the town where they happened, with uncommon seriousness (yet with flashes of self-awareness and humor).

Your correspondent’s personal pick for the best movie (and best performance) of 2021 leads off this week’s disc and streaming picks, alongside Pixar’s latest, a jaw-dropping array of new 4Ks, two from Charles Bronson, the long-awaited Blu-ray debut of a Walter Hill favorite, a new set from a sexploitation pioneer, and much, much more.

PICK OF THE WEEK:

“Licorice Pizza”: Paul Thomas Anderson’s return to the ‘70s San Fernando Valley was one of last year’s best films, and dodged the feeling of “Boogie Nights Redux” by adopting an entirely different vibe – relaxed and rolling rather than coked-up and manic.

Speaking to THR, John Carpenter continues to showcase his DGAF energy in a big way.

While a franchise was born, subsequent sequels never really took off. That’s changed with 2018’s “Halloween,” a legacy re-quel from filmmaker David Gordon Green, a sequel to the original that discounts all the other films and picks up 40 years after the original movie. Carpenter is still involved as an exec producer, the composer, and an overall godfather.

For ’twas on that very night that the events soberly documented in “Halloween” (2018), David Gordon Green‘s fun first stab (intentional, as are all puns that follow) at revitalizing John Carpenter‘s beloved franchise, took place. And it is on the same night, a little bit during but mostly just immediately after all those creative impalings, knifings, shootings, beatings, and trappings-in-the-cellar-and-burnings, that “Halloween Kills” unfolds — though don’t worry overmuch if you can’t remember precisely the ins and outs of who got offed when and where in the previous film, as Green provides plenty of flashbacks and callbacks to remind you.

Because they’re both celebrating big anniversaries. Oh, and because John Carpenter is one of the best filmmakers of all time and Kurt Russell is a national treasure.

This attitude is refreshing to hear from a legendary filmmaker and definitely can be attributed to his status as one of the best American filmmakers of all time. So, when talking about the upcoming sequel to his ‘Halloween’ franchise, “Halloween Kills,” he’s been no stranger to hyperbolic statements.

He’s one of the best filmmakers to ever live (I’ll argue this to my dying day). He’s someone that revolutionized the horror genre. And he’s also someone that doesn’t bullshit you, especially over the past few years where it’s clear the filmmaker is just as happy playing video games as he is making movies. So, if the man who created “Halloween” is here to tell you just how great the upcoming sequel, “Halloween Kills,” is, then it’s probably because he honestly believes it.

Speaking at this year’s Fantasia Fest, John Carpenter was asked if he had talked to Jason Blum and Blumhouse about possibly directing any features.

However, instead of canceling or moving forward with a potential in-person festival, Fantasia has decided to go digital this year and has finished announcing its complete lineup.

To say that Morricone is one of the most influential composers in film history is an understatement. There are few people who have worked over the decades in the film industry to have such a singular impact on the medium, specifically in the genre of Westerns.

That’s largely why remakes haven’t been so successful in the past. (One look at the remakes of “The Thing” and Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” will prove that.) But that doesn’t mean Hollywood is going to let those properties sit on the shelf gathering dust. Silly movie fan.
