Last week, the trades revealed details about “The Department,” a new espionage political thriller series based on the critically acclaimed hit French drama “Le Bureau des Legendes.” Michael Fassbender was cast in the lead role, and the series came from George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures shingle. While early reports said Clooney would direct, a new Paramount+ announcement revealed that he’s just executive producing the project and Golden Globe and multi-BAFTA winner Joe Wright (“Pride and Prejudice,” “The Darkest Hour” and “Atonement”) will direct the series instead.

In that regard, versatile British director Joe Wright’s visually stylish, but ultimately sluggish thriller commits perhaps the most cardinal genre sin of them all. Somewhere amid suspicious neighbors who might have killed someone, stormy New York City nights, and one too many instances of pill-popping and heavy-drinking, it forgets to have fun, aggressively molding its “Gone Girl” echoes into a contemporary “Rear Window” template (if that much isn’t already evident by the title).

You wouldn’t be wrong for thinking “The Woman in the Window” has already been released. The film was originally scheduled to be released in October 2019 but was delayed by Disney (who was set to release the film under its 20th Century Studios banner) until 2020. And of course, we know what happened next with COVID-19 displacing the film further. Now, it appears the Mouse House is ready to cut bait and move on, sending the film to a streamer instead of trying to navigate the ever-complicated 2021 release schedule.
