The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced films for its event that runs March 12 – March 20, 2010. Chris Morris’ pitch-black satire “Four Lions” has been chosen as the closing night film, but honestly we haven’t heard of that one. Of interest to us are as follows:

Elijah Drenner’s “American Grindhouse” which is a documentary on American exploitation films (sure to have appearances by Quentin Tarantino and other likely suspects) and Ivan Engler and Ralf Etter sci-fi film, “Cargo” from Switzerland.

No matter what you think of this… uhh, trailer for “Repo Chick,” the sort-of quasi sequel to Alex Cox’s 1984 classic, “Repo Men,” — and there’s probably only two ways you can view it — it still must serve as some kind of cautionary tale.

And perhaps it begs the question: is this what happens when you’re stuck in director’s jail? Cox’s career kicked off rather excellently with the aforementioned cult-film classic (and he went on to have a seriously good ’80s run including “Sid & Nancy” (’86), “Straight to Hell” (’87) starring The Clash’s Joe Strummer, and the less-successful, but still-celebrated “Walker” (’87, which the Criterion Collection retroactively minted a few years ago).

When Jim Jarmusch showed his 1989 film, “Mystery Train” at the Criterion Collection curated screening room at the All Tomorrow’s Parties indie-rock festival in New York earlier this year, we assumed this was a good sign.

And it turns out it was more than just wishful thinking on our side. Criterion has announced via Facebook that “Mystery Train” will indeed come to the collection next summer.

When we released Jim Jarmusch’s films Down by Law and Night on Earth, the supplement Ask Jim, in which he answered questions viewers wrote in about his films, was so popular that we’ve decided to do it again.

Remember the rock doc, “Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten” that played Sundance ’07 and was released by IFC late last summer in the U.S.?

It’s finally coming to DVD on June 24 according to Amazon and Pitchfork. Anything extra on it? Both sources don’t say.

Our “review,” was this: Julian Temple (the man behind The Sex Pistols doc “The Filth & The Fury“) doesn’t do a disservice here to his late Clash buddy Joe Strummer in the fair and balanced ‘Future Is Unwritten.’ The film is neither a love-letter to Strummer, nor is it the toppling of a sacred cow, but rather a reflective look back at the punk rock icon warts and all.

The North American rights to Julien Temple’s documentary, “Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten” has been acquired by IFC. The film will finally get a proper U.S. release date on November 2. The soundtrack, which we already wrote about, has been out for months features 20 music tracks including three previously unreleased Clash tracks (demos) and an unreleased version of reggae classic, “Natty Rebel” by dubmaster U-Roy, among other tracks influential to the late Strummer (Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan; the rest of the tracks are audio excerpts from the film).
