After what was rumored to be a long search, Thierry Fremaux has found his president for the 2022 Cannes Film Festival Jury. Legendary French actor Vincent Lindon, who starred in last year’s Palme d’Or winner, “Titane,” will take the mantle following Spike Lee‘s reign last year. Lindon also won the Best Actor prize at the festival in 2015 for “The Measure of a Man.”

Joining Lindon will be a slew of well-known international film figures who also happen to be members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (for those paying attention).

Two filmmakers uniquely fascinated with mapping and navigating moments in time, Mia Hansen-Løve and Joachim Trier, know how to pass an hour. And, in fact, their free talk on Monday evening — part of this year’s New York Film Festival, where Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island” and Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” are both Main Slate selections — ran about 20 minutes over its scheduled 60, though attendees packed into the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center’s 75-capacity Amphitheater didn’t seem to mind.  

“I need so much time to tell a story,” said Hansen-Løve, discussing how the passage of days appears to ebb and flow throughout the seven patiently naturalistic features she’s directed to date, from the coming-of-age story “Goodbye First Love” (2011) to decades-spanning rave-scene drama “Eden” (2014).

We’ve been eagerly anticipating “Reprise” and “Oslo August 31” director Joachim Trier‘s new film “Thelma,” but it seems festival programmers are less enthused, at least overseas. The film wasn’t at Cannes, doesn’t seem like its going to Venice, and will instead debut at the Norwegian International Film Festival in August, before crossing the pond to TIFF. Perhaps it’s too genre-y for prestigious fest types, but whatever the reason, it hasn’t lessened our excitement for the picture.
