It wouldn’t be an Academy Award ceremony without some controversy. While Emma Stone’s (“Poor Things”) Best Actress win over Lily Gladstone (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”) caused a lot of drama over social media, one of the biggest blunders—or what some suspected to be one— was around the presentation of The Best Picture award. Al Pacino presented the award to Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb drama “Oppenheimer.” But many noted Pacino’s awkward reading of the award, seemingly bungled and rushed, not mentioning any of the nominees, and killing the suspension of the moment rather than building to a dramatic finish.

Kimmel will join an impressive group of at least four-time emcees including Bob Hope (19 times), Billy Crystal (9 times), Johnny Carson (5 times), Whoopi Goldberg (4 times), and Jack Lemmon (4 times).

It was a ceremony dominated by wins for “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Telecast producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner clearly had an idea of what was in store as they slotted the show’s categories to create as much natural drama as possible when, in fact, there turned out to be very few upsets. That means ABC and The Academy have a mission they desperately need to complete: Make America watch the Oscars again. Following last year’s rebound to 16.6 million viewers from 2021’s record low 10.4 million viewers, the pressure is on to get the ratings somewhat closer to 2020’s 23.6 million viewers (a pre-pandemic record low). Much of that responsibility is on the shoulders of this year’s host, Jimmy Kimmel who is emceeing the ceremony for the third time.

Host Jimmy Kimmel didn’t mince words with his audience. Conducting a live Emmys telecast during a global pandemic is pretty frivolous. And, at the beginning at least, the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards did a surprisingly good job pulling that off. In other words, it wasn’t a trainwreck.

The emcee, Leslie Jones, described how she took an empty plane from New York to Los Angeles and was taken to an empty studio which included only a cameraperson. Joining her via zoom, skype or some other online conference tool from their homes (or some other locations) were Laverne Cox, Josh Gad and Tatiana Maslany.

When you’re the star of a major motion picture, it’s obvious that you’ll likely have to appear on one of the late-night talk shows to help promote the project. Normally, these appearances include a quick interview where the celeb talks about how great the movie is and how everyone is a joy to work with, followed by a silly game that is played to show that the star is really just like everyone else. Last night, however, that’s not what happened with Joaquin Phoenix on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

As seen in the clip below, the interview with Phoenix went pretty well for the first seven or so minutes, with Joaquin Phoenix being his typical self, discussing his potentially Oscar-worthy turn in “Joker.” But then, Kimmel threw a curveball that was intended to be funny but ended up leading to one of the more awkward exchanges you’ll find on late-night TV all year.

At a spry 96-years-old, Norman Lear has proved that the career of a television pioneer is never really over. After creating or co-creating classic TV programs from the ’70s and 80’s such as “All in the Family,” “Good Times,” “Maude” and “The Jeffersons,” Lear segued to movie producing and political advocacy. In 2017 he returned to television with Netflix’s modern-day version of “One Day At A Time.” And while the future of that series appears to still be in limbo, Lear is far from done.

The overnight ratings are in for the 90th Academy Awards are in and, as expected, they weren’t good. ABC had lowered expectations for this year’s Oscar telecast because of the lack of “big hits” among the Best Picture nominees (ridiculous, but more on that later) and the show currently sits with a Nielsen low 26.5 million viewers. That’s a huge drop from even last year’s disconcerting 32.9 million, the smallest audience since 2008.  For comparison’ sake, just four years ago the Ellen DeGeneres hosted 86th Oscars had 43.7 million viewers, the most watched Oscars since 2000 so this isn’t a decade long trend.

This year’s Oscars was round two for Jimmy Kimmel as host. While he did a fine job last year, I tend to enjoy the more biting comedy of Golden Globes ex-host Ricky Gervais, Kimmel’s first Oscar foray was overshadowed by the now-infamous Best Picture flub. So, with that in mind, you had to imagine that Kimmel would come out of the gates talking about last year’s show.

Right off the bat, Kimmel’s monologue discussed the “Moonlight”/”La La Land” mix-up, joking that he was offered an opportunity to include the accountants in a skit last year, but declined because he didn’t want them distracted.

Last year, it took forever for the Academy to find their host for the Oscars, only announcing that Jimmy Kimmel would take the stage in December. Well, this year, they’re way ahead of the game.

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced today that Kimmel will return to host the Oscars in 2018, with producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd also returning. The late night host was generally well received, even if the ratings were down from 2016.

Well, that was certainly an Oscar ceremony. A long and relatively safe Oscar season looked to be culminating in a long and relatively safe evening, until a perfect storm of human error led to an unforgettable/mortifying/thrilling moment of live TV, and one weirdly fitting for a time in human history when everything seems to have gone bugnuts crazy.

It’s destined to be a ceremony remembered for being the one where two Best Picture winners were announced, but as ever, there were plenty of highs and lows beyond that, so beyond, you’ll find the Worst & Best of the 2017 Academy Awards (leading with worst, because, well, there’s some big stuff we’d have to get to first).

Hosting the Oscars is generally speaking a pretty thankless task. By and large, the format and length of the show, and the often safe writing, doesn’t make it easy for anybody to knock it out of the park. And while Jimmy Kimmel didn’t hit a homerun, he mostly handled himself well as last night’s MC.
