It’s a good time to be a fan of Frankenstein’s Monster. Or is it? Readers may judge for themselves after they peruse the first-look pics from Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s “The Bride!” below. Gyllenhaal took to Instagram today to promote her upcoming film, featuring two stills of its leading stars, Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. And from the looks of things, Gyllenhaal’s partner Peter Sarsgaard, who also stars in the project, wasn’t lying when he told The Independent that “The Bride!” is a “punk monster movie.” Just look at Bale in that pic: is that cool or “Jared Leto in “Suicide Squad” cool?

While some strides have been made in recent years, pay inequity in Hollywood remains a hot-topic issue for actresses. Despite efforts to align pay in the studio system, pay still tends to be based on gender and hew in favor of male actors. And so, Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) isn’t holding back. In a recent interview with CNN’s “The Amanpour Hour,” Colman was quick to point out that even with forward advancements in the industry, she’d still be making a lot more money if she was a man. 

“Don’t get me started on the pay disparity, but male actors get paid more because they used to say [men] drew in the audiences,” Colman told CNN in a recent interview (via EW) with veteran journalist/host Christine Amanpour.

It is brought to life in a new comedy designed as a star vehicle for actors Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. The Oscar-nominated duo gives spirited performances in a diverting little trifle that isn’t especially illuminating but is an undemanding watch.

There is perhaps no movie more personally – and emphasis on “personally” – disappointing at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival for this critic than Christos Nikou’s “Fingernails.” As a big fan of his exquisite 2020 debut, “Apples,” we were crossing our fingers that he’d avoid the dreaded sophomore slump. We’re sad to report that’s not the case.

TELLURIDE – The events at a secluded Mennonite colony in Bolivia during the late ‘00s spurred headlines around the world. Men from the extremely conservative religious group had raped multiple women in their community while they slept. They got away with it for years by using an anesthetic used for cows that rendered their victims helpless. When the women woke up in pain or accused any men in the community of violating them, they were framed as being “hysterical” and imagining things.

The trailer for “Men” is simple; a little too simple. Like scores of horror characters before her, we see that Jessie Buckley has relocated to the countryside in order to get away from the horrors of her real life. Of course, something isn’t quite right with her new home. Her plans for tranquility are quickly interrupted by an unknowable, gradually encroaching, and possibly supernatural threat. Increasingly, she is tormented by an endless series of Rory Kinnears, as the small English country town she is taking up residence in seems to be exclusively made up of men (and a child) with the same face (all portrayed by neo-“Bond” player Kinnear) – and they are all intent on disturbing her.
