Cameron Crowe (Still) Working On Marvin Gaye Biopic

Three and a half years ago Cameron Crowe began quietly working on a biopic of the late soul R&B singer Marvin Gaye.

We say quietly because to find any such references from 2007 are nearly impossible and if you look at most movie or music sites or blogs you won’t find nary a mention (yes, including the good ol’ Playlist). Essentially, this has never been widely reported. Interestingly enough, it was mentioned briefly in a August 2009, LATimes article, but no one seemed to pick up on it.

Sundance Flick ‘Peter And Vandy’ Gets An Indie-Rock Boost In The National, Animal Collective And More

Little-known Sundance film, or rather indie film that’s about to appear at Sundance 2009, “Peter And Vandy,” is about to rock some indie-rock on the indie-going film world. According to publicists for the film, the picture will feature music by The National, Animal Collective, Patrick Wolf, Menomena, Les Savy Fav, Frightened Rabbit and The Shaky Hands.

Directed by first-time filmmaker Jay DiPietro the film stars our Brooklyn friend Jess Weixler (the star of “Teeth,” hey Jess!), Jason Ritter, Jesse L.

What’s Goin’ On?: Yet Another Marvin Gaye Biopic That’s What – This One With Deeper Music Access

Another Marvin Gaye biopic? Yup. F. Gary Gray, the director behind “The Italian Job” and the stoner comedy, “Friday,” is finally getting his with to direct “Marvin,” from a script written by C. Gaby Mitchell (the guy who wrote “Blood Diamond”).

According to Variety, Gray has long wanted to helm a Gaye biopic, but music rights were always an issue. But now the producers of the film apparently have complete music rights to Gaye’s catalog, including hits like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “What’s Goin’ On” and “Let’s Get It On.”

The difference between this doc and the upcoming James Gandolfini produced Gaye flick, “Sexual Healing,” starring Jesse L.
