Unfortunately, it’s been quite a while since we’ve seen some of his work. Thankfully, that’s about to change as Netflix readies the release of his latest feature, “Rebel Ridge.” But it wasn’t smooth sailing to get to this point. And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, we talk to Saulnier about the long journey it took for “Rebel Ridge” to get released.

Or rather, the acclaimed indie director Jeremy Saulnier has finally returned with his long-awaited fifth feature film and, more importantly, returns to form after the minor misstep of 2019’s “Hold the Dark.” His best film since “Green Room,” and nearly as gripping, anxiety-inducing, and visceral, Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge” is a no-fuss, no-muss dynamic action thriller.

His latest, the long-awaited crime thriller “Rebel Ridge,” finally hits Netflix this September.

The thriller centers on an ex-Marine grappling with a web of small-town corruption when an attempt to post bail for his cousin escalates into a violent standoff with the local police chief.

But that’s hardly the case, and perhaps more accurately, season three marks a quasi-return to safety, albeit one that’s needlessly more complicated and predictably dour.

Set in three time periods, the 1980s, the 1990s and 2015, Pizzolatto makes it extra difficult on himself and the viewer in season three, featuring a crime at its center that spans four decades.

With the streaming service’s current release mode set to full-on tidal wave, it can be overwhelming just thinking about what to watch and even keeping up on what’s new and worth your time. Hopefully, we can be of service, as both items on this show’s talk sheet are worth your time.

An aspect that attracted director Jeremy Saulnier to the streaming service for this latest film “Hold the Dark.” Saulnier burst onto the indie film scene with the fantastic “Blue Ruin” followed by the equally great “Green Room.” The making of “Green Room” was so claustrophobic and constrained that Saulnier wanted to break out and take in the sights for “Hold the Dark.”

“There’s scenes in the Iraq War.

His last film, “Green Room,” almost entirely took place inside of a bar, in fact. However, for his upcoming project “Hold the Dark,” not only is the director actually filming outdoors, but he’s also upping his scale quite a bit.

In a new interview with EW, Saulnier talks about the treacherous conditions that the cast and crew experienced while filming “Hold the Dark.” And long story short, it sounds miserable.

With his first two films leaning heavily into the dark and bloody, it’s surprising that the director says that his next project “Hold the Dark” might be his darkest and bloodiest work yet.

And now we have it.

“Films must be open to the possibility of being distributed in cinemas”, he explained, in a report from Deadline.

The upcoming, high-anticipated third season of “True Detective” seemed like it was shaping up to be a return to form for the HBO series. After an impressive first season (with stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey), “True Detective” faltered in its second season, leaving the future of the series unclear.

Part of that narrative was hiring a critically-acclaimed indie auteur in “Green Room” director Jeremy Saulnier to help lead the show visually. But two episodes into the new season, Saulnier is exiting the show to be replaced with Daniel Sackheim, known for helming several episodes of FX‘s “The Americans.” HBO is calling the change up a “scheduling issue.”

READ MORE: ‘True Detective’ Season 3 Won’t Arrive Until 2019

The cable network released the following statement on the filmmaking changes through a spokesperson: “Director and executive producer Jeremy Saulnier has completed the first two episodes of True Detective season 3 and will be departing the production due to scheduling issues.

In a year where franchise after franchise underperformed, horror films remained a consistent draw in multiplexes, and for the most part with new original movies rather than the umpteenth sequel or reboot of “Friday The 13th,” “Saw” or “Paranormal Activity.”

Away from mainstream theaters, there was great stuff too, whether it was Netflix getting into the scary game with a pair of excellent low-key chillers, A24 having their biggest hit ever with a Sundance fave, a couple of inventive Korean pics, or arthouse crossovers drawing on fears from Iran and Portugal.

Established in 1969 by the French Directors Guild (and therefore not part of the festival’s Official Selection which reportedly leads to a little friction between the two entities), the parallel festival, held simultaneously with Cannes, has hosted some of the most exciting talents to have shaped modern film culture.

With his breakout film “Blue Ruin,” the filmmaker took a seemingly straightforward tale of vengeance, and turned into a twisty thriller that detailed the nerve-jangling consequences that come with cycles of violence. And his latest, “Green Room,” offers another reinvention of a genre convention. It takes the fight for survival against murderous thugs, and places it inside a punk rock venue run by neo-Nazis, adding an extra layer of danger and dread to the proceedings.
