Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton wasn’t the first African American basketball player to sign an NBA contract, but he was the first to sign one and go on to play professionally. Without him, the sport wouldn’t be what it is today. Now, it’s time for movie audiences to take in his story.

With the likes of Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe and Jeremy Piven leading Mark Pellington’s John Cassavetes-inspired indie drama “I Melt With You” we always figured some estrogen would be added to the balance out the mix; we just didn’t think the choice would be so….interesting.

Porn star Sasha Grey along with along with Zander Eckhouse (“Huge”), Abhi Sinha (“The Social Network”) and Arielle Kebbel (“Red Mist”) have joined the film about “a group of college buddies (Jane, Lowe and Piven) who, now as adults, look within themselves and find emptiness when they have their annual summer reunion.

Mark Pellington’s microbudgeted $1 million dollar John Cassavetes-inspired drama “I Melt With You” has found its fourth and final male lead. Christian McKay, perhaps best known for playing Orson Welles in Richard Linklater’s “Me And Orson Welles,” who also has a role in Woody Allen’s forthcoming “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger” has joined Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe and Jeremy Piven in Pellington’s grim film that will focus on the “pain of the modern male psyche” as it “follows four college friends now in their forties who find themselves immersed in various stages and types of mid-life crises.”

Rob Lowe Joins Jeremy Piven & Thomas Jane In Micro-Budget Thriller ‘I Melt With You’

So, what can $1 million buy you these days? In Hollywood, not a helluva lot, unless you’re writer/director Mark Pellington.

That number is actually higher than the entire budget of his forthcoming thriller “I Melt With You.” The project already has Jeremy Piven and Thomas Jane set to star, and yet another well known face has come aboard the project, with Rob Lowe lending his particular swagger to the proceedings. The film, vaguely described as a “thriller [that] follows the interconnecting lives of four men,” will find Lowe playing “a doctor struggling with deep personal loss and a growing drug addiction.” The film will focus on the “pain of the modern male psyche” in what Pellington hopes will be this generation’s “Husbands.” Good luck with that.

Jeremy Piven & Thomas Jane Join Mark Pellington’s ‘I Melt With You’

Do you know the story of video director/filmmaker Mark Pellington? It’s rather tragic and heartbreaking.

Pellington’s wife died suddenly in 2004, leaving the father to tend to his 2 1/2 -year-old daughter by himself.

While he did some work in the iterim, episodes of “Cold Case” and the concert film, “U23D,” the director finally followed up 2002’s “The Mothman Prophecies” with the feature-length film, “Henry Poole Is Here.”

Clearly inspired by this tragedy, the picture is essentially about a man who has given up all hope, and decides to drink himself to death.

Paramount Dips Into The ‘Paranormal’ Kitty Once Again, Acquires ‘Area 51’

-After what was said to be a bidding war, Paramount has acquired Oren Peli’s follow-up to “Paranormal Activity,” the alien found footage feature “Area 51.” The $5 million film reportedly finds teenagers sneaking into the famous military location and encountering spooky happenings. The Paramount deal also involves a clause for a sequel to “Paranormal Activity,” which may hit theaters with “Area 51” in 2010.

-J.J. Abrams is producing a feature film adaptation of the Genndy Tartakovsky animated series “Samurai Jack.” Tartakovsky has been working on the film for awhile now, but Abrams’ Bad Robot production company is stepping up to ensure a theatrical release for the $20 million project.

Does anyone really care about the “The Goods: The Don Ready Story“, errr, now subtitled, ‘Live Hard, Sell Hard’ or is the film just awfully and unfortunately timed?

Executive produced by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, greenlighting a movie starring Jeremy Piven probably seemed like a good idea at the time when Piven was “Entourage” hot and perhaps seemed like a good chance to showcase a lot of strong talent not on the A-list.

Peter Jackson has revealed the timeline for his proposed “Tintin” trilogy with Steven Spielberg to Empire magazine (not online yet). “We were originally planning three [films] to be in production at the same time in different stages, and we may well do that. At the moment we have this one and the studio[s] is financing the second one as well, which is in pre-production.” Will their releases follow Jackson’s one-film-a-year plan? [/Film]

Producer Andrew Hauptman (“State Of Play”) recently spoke of his plans for a film based on legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi.
