Because of truly odd ownership issues, this version of Clarice Starling’s life will never use the name Hannibal Lecter, but the vicious cannibal looms over the proceedings in a few ways, and not just because of the iconic performances by Jodie Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

While fans keep waiting for good news that the show will be miraculously revived, CBS just went ahead and ate fans’ metaphorical liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti – meaning they have picked up a show about Clarice Starling appropriately titled “Clarice.”

Ah, it’s that time of year again. Free script season! When studios want Oscar consideration for their screenplays, they put up all that stuff for free so voters can easily access the materials and vote.

So, following suit, Sony Pictures Classics has put up seven scripts up for consideration including Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York” (a great read, nowhere near as dour as the film), Jenny Lumet’s lauded, “Rachel Getting Married” script (she’s the daughter of the great Sydney Lumet, btw), Philippe Claudel’s original, “I’ve Loved You So Long” screenplay (one of our fave films of the year), plus scripts of “The Class,” “Waltz With Bashir,” “Frozen River” and “O’Horten.” Get ’em while they’re hot.

Jonathan Demme introduced his latest film, “Rachel Getting Married,” tonight along with screenwriter Jenny Lumet (the daughter of director Sydney Lumet). The film comes out this weekend in limited release so we should spit out a review now, but… We don’t really have time for a full blown examination of the film, but suffice to say we found the its gritty (butt-ugly DV) cinema verite (takes adjusting to; we felt seasick like “Cloverfield”) and it’s mostly irredeemable and unlikable protagonist (a good, but overrated Anne Hathaway) something of a struggle to tolerate.
