Tim Burton could have easily fallen into the trap of making yet another Hollywood “legacyquel” by reviving his 1988 breakout hit “Beetlejuice.” He’s not entirely immune from providing fan service in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a proclivity demonstrated as early on as the opening credits that mimic the helicopter tracking shot of the original … just with darker color grading now. But overall, Burton grasps the need not merely to resurrect the beloved characters—he must also revivify them.

Thirty-six years after the original, and after years of pursuing different follow-up ideas, director Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice,” sequel, titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” is finally coming to theaters this year. Written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on a story by Seth Grahame-Smith (Burton’s “Dark Shadows” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”), not much is known about the film other than it’s a follow-up to the original, about a ghost who’s recruited to help haunt a house.

It’s showtime again, baby. On September 5, Warner Bros. will finally release the long-gestating sequel to “Beetlejuice” after decades lingering in the Netherworld. Ahead of the film’s trailer release (stay tuned for that, likely tomorrow), Entertainment Weekly has provided two first-look stills from Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” The first image shows Michael Keaton back in his glory as the whitty con artist ghost, and another one with a funeral scene (mourning the death of patriarch Charles Deetz?) that features modern members of the Deetz family (played by Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, and Justin Theroux) wearing quite fashion-focused goth outfits.

Once Marvel came calling, Taika Waititi was shot out of his comedy environment and was given the keys to a lot of blockbuster material. While “Akira” never surfaced, and neither has his “Star Wars” project yet, the filmmaker has spent the second half of his career vacillating between big-budget movies (two “Thor” movies for Marvel) and smaller-scale comedic indies. So while Waititi’s last movie, “Next Goal Wins,” was a Searchlight soccer comedy in a smaller vein, it was actually completed ages ago and held by the studio for the right date.

Quick, cue up someone yelling “groomer!” at the idea of an inappropriate student/teach dynamic in the trailer for the new dramatic thriller, “Miller’s Girl.” While it looks and sounds salacious, the drama— about a creative writing assignment that yields complex results between a teacher and his talented student— seems like it’s a little bit more nuanced and complex than just that (well, hopefully).

“Finestkind,” the new drama from “L.A. Confidential” and “Mystic River” screenwriter and “42” director Brian Helgeland, is not a great movie, but some of it is fascinating, even when it doesn’t work. Easy to dismiss because some of its broad, ridiculous, and suspension-of-disbelief turns—it’s essentially about a New England fishing community band of brothers that turn to drug dealers and spiraling criminal consequences in order to get out of the illegal activities jam they’re already in—the plot is fairly uninspired and breaks suspension of disbelief early.
