Prestige television heads back to the heartland of the country with Showtime’s “American Rust,” based on the 2009 novel by Philipp Meyer. Given it’s a program about a Pennsylvania cop facing personal and professional conflicts in a small town, comparisons will be made to HBO’s superior “Mare of Easttown,” even if there’s less mystery to this drama, despite violence again being central to the storytelling.

While the filmmakers behind Showtime’s two-part “The Comey Rule” have clearly overestimated the public’s desire for— uhhh, gestures in the general direction of anything and everything in entertainment vaguely resembling the Trump Shitshow, any ancillary offshoots (see the Fox News portrait “The Loudest Voice”) and generally, politics in the corrosive age of toxic politics— writer/director Bill Ray’s “The Comey Rule” does open up with a good, if simplistic, bit and intriguing question.

The political biopic is a time-honored tradition in Hollywood. However, normally, those stories are told well after the person has left office or even passed away. In the case of President Donald Trump, he has yet to finish his first term (and possibly last) as the Commander-in-Chief and Showtime is already releasing a limited series that sheds light on the corruption that got him the job in the first place.

But the one that arguably kicked-off everything, that led to the Mueller trial and the case for impeaching the President—which of course happened, even if the partisan Republicans didn’t vote to find him guilty—is the firing of Ex-FBI Director James Comey. It’s been one of the many, many firings during the chaotic and unstable four-year, hopefully, one-term Trump presidency and repeat offense: anytime someone ruled in a decision that wasn’t in favor to Trump or not as “loyal” as the presidential crime mafia boss would like, he fired them.

According to Deadline, Golden Globe-nominated and Emmy-winning actor Brendan Gleeson has signed on to star as Trump in the upcoming CBS miniseries “A Higher Loyalty,” based on the recent book “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership.” Gleeson will star opposite Jeff Daniels, who is set to play James Comey.
