What’s going on with the Jason Bourne franchise? Funny you ask. Well, like a lot of properties, it’s moving to television. USA Networks has announced a prequel series to the Matt Damon-led movies called “Treadstone,” named after the top-secret black ops program of the CIA that featured prominently in the ‘Bourne’ franchise.

“Treadstone” is written and executive produced by Tim Kring best known for his creation of the show’s “Strange World,” “Crossing Jordan,” and “Heroes.” Ramin Bahrani, the indie filmmaker behind “99 Homes,” and the upcoming HBO movie “Fahrenheit 451,” will direct the pilot, and serve as an executive producer.

Last year, everyone’s favorite amnesiac spy returned in “Jason Bourne,” and the results were mixed. The film didn’t have the same kinetic magic of the original trilogy, and while its the second highest grossing film of the series worldwide, “Jason Bourne” seemed like it was creatively running on fumes. Nonetheless, producer Frank Marshall is angling for a fifth movie, even if Matt Damon doesn’t seem to be in any rush.

September is here, and the fall film festivals have started —check out our Venice coverage so far, and our Telluride coverage starts tomorrow and TIFF next week. Nevertheless, the days are getting shorter and the temperature a little cooler, so it’s time to look back on 2016’s moviegoing summer.

In most respects, it was a bad one. Most tentpoles disappointed, and unusually, it seemed that most underperformed at the box office (though it’s interesting to note that total box office is up about 3% from last year, thanks to a few monster hits).

Well, it was what pundits essentially expected from Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad” and its second-week box-office performance. The film was dressed down by critics as badly as “Batman v Superman” (they have equal Rotten Tomatoes scores) and the DCU picture took a similar nosedive in its follow-up week, falling 67.3% in week two. It’s a similar crash to that of ‘Dawn Of Justice,’ which tumbled nearly 70% in its second week of release.

Accelerating forward with supercharged determination, “Jason Bourne,” the fifth installment of the spy action thriller series, might be a muscular and visceral chapter in the ‘Bourne’ saga, but it’s also a familiar collision. Perhaps less acrobatic overall and more of a bruising affair, both physically and, to a lesser extent, emotionally, while more brawny in its action, very little else has changed.

It’s easy to forget the impact that the ‘Bourne’ stories — the thinking man’s action film — has had on film culture.
