With the massive success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the idea of kid-focused video game films is no longer scary. They can actually work and launch franchises. Now, it’s time for “A Minecraft Movie” to test that hypothesis.

How’s this for the most unlikely ensemble cast? Deadline reports that “SNL” alum Kate McKinnon and New Zealand comedic actor Jermaine Clement are the latest to join Jason Momoa in the Warner Bros. adaptation of “Minecraft.” The news comes just one day after Jennifer Coolidge joined the cast of the upcoming blockbuster. That’s quite the motley crew for one movie, which on paper looks like a good hang for all involved.

Jason Momoa & Jared Hess Reportedly Teaming For ‘Minecraft’ Animated Movie At Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. has been developing an animated feature film based on the beloved monster-hit video game “Minecraft” for ages and it looks like the studio is ready to get things going sooner rather than later. The game focuses on players using blocks to create structures and worlds with a unique pixelated look, allowing for many interpretations of a feature film adaptation, much like another Warner Bros. Animation project, “The Lego Movie.”

We’ve finally got a promising update on “Minecraft” as Jason Momoa (“Aquaman“) is in negotiations with the studio to voice the film’s unnamed heroic lead according to The Ankler.

Perhaps I’ll lose some Film Twitter cred, but I also don’t care, so here goes: “Shanghai Noon” and (in particular) “Shanghai Knights” are total guilty pleasures for me. Say what you will, but I think the pairing and chemistry of Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson works quite well in those movies, and have a good amount of popcorn charm. So a third movie?

It’s been a long bumpy ride for “Masterminds,” generally for reasons that have nothing to do with the film. Relativity went through major upheavals last year and nearly folded, which pushed back the film’s original release date of August 19, 2015 to nearly a full year later. In between, the studio nearly approached bankruptcy and won a lawsuit against Netflix, which has the streaming rights for the film and intended to debut it online before it opens in cinemas.

Fox Searchlight Shitcans ‘Gentlemen Broncos’ Expansion

Fox Searchlight hasn’t been having the best year. “Whip It” was due to be their big breakout but it couldn’t even recoup its $15 million budget. They spent a pretty penny pushing “Adam” to only $2 million, “Amelia” stalled out as an awards contender, and audiences stayed away from the broad “Miss March” and “My Life In Ruins.” Some are saying there’s hope on the horizon with a rumored release of “Crazy Heart,” but that won’t be enough to rescue the ailing studio-indie it seems, as they’ve made a major move in completely canceling the nationwide expansion of “Gentlemen Broncos.”

“Broncos,” the latest from “Napoleon Dynamite” helmer Jared Hess, opened last weekend on only two screens, a puzzling release for a film that was never going to receive love from the arthouse crowd.

Yes, it’s true. We’ve been hard on Jared Hess’ “Gentlemen Broncos,” cause it just looks… not like our thing… and right now it’s sitting at a rather poor 12% score on Rotten Tomatoes so maybe our prejudging distaste for the silly looking film is very justified (though our reviewer, who didn’t love it, was kinder to it than the consensus).

But we will say this, the music featured in the film is rather excellent and well-chosen.

In Theaters: ‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’ (Stay Home)

If you have any sense in the world you’re probably got a weekend worth of haunted houses and spooky hay rides ahead of you and will avoid theaters this weekend. Good call. Michael Jackson should be have no problem topping the charts this week, but us Playlisters will probably be catching ‘Wild Things’ or “A Serious Man” again or going to see things in limited release. If you’re in a city that’s not L.A. or New York, take the weekend off or catch things that are finally expanding into your market, but MJ’s kids, his family, Sony, Sony Records and his estate are rich enough as it is.

In Jared Hess’ “Gentlemen Broncos,” Michael Angarano is all slumped shoulders and furrowed brows as Benjamin, a home-schooled teen obsessed with low-rent sci-fi. Unlike Hess’ previous films “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre,” our protagonist is an introvert, his love of fiction and adventure expressed through a novel he’s been storyboarding, designing, illustrating, and finally writing, “Yeast Lords.” His rookie novel, following a southern-raised rogue adventurer in the spirit of Buck Rogers as he battles to keep his sperm from being harvested, is just about the only part of Benjamin’s life that elicits a smile.

We probably didn’t articulate it and or just ignored it, but the trailer for Jared Hess’ (director of the obnoxious nerd-fest, “Napoleon Dynamite”) “Gentleman Broncos,” looked completely excruciating and up there alongside “Vampire’s Assistant,” as one of the most retarded least enticing trailers of the year (everything you might hate about this guys’ cloying and self-consciously quirky, affected films seem to be rolled into one; though we do admit to having some mild affection for “Nacho Libre,” mainly because half the score was composed by Beck).

Damn, so we and presumably 25,000 other bloggers get hit with an email by Fox Searchlight concerning, a new video from Dr. Ronald Chevalier. OK, and? Who the hell is that? And why is there some micro-site built for him? Ah, well, it’s apparently very-early viral marketing for Jared Hess’ (“Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre”) new film, “Gentlemen Broncos,”which stars Michael Angarano (“Snow Angels”), Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement one half of HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords.” And evidently the campaign started quietly even earlier in August.
