Near the beginning of the British comedy “Fisherman’s Friends,” we’re treated to a choir of fisherman belting out a rendition of the classic sea shanty, “John Karaka.” The crew is singing against a coral sky, and singing well enough to earn a record deal offer from a hot-shot producer. The lads laugh in his face. But then they think it over: Why not sing on the radio and make some money?

Why not, indeed?

Kill, Clone, Repeat: Netflix’s Hardboiled Cyberpunk Series ‘Altered Carbon’ Is A Grind [Review]

Richard K. Morgan’s heavy-hitting cyberpunk noir novels, the first of which has now been turned into the ten-part Netflix series “Altered Carbon” with highly uneven results, weren’t the kind of science fiction that had a utopian view of technological advancement. The novel, and to only some extent the show, understand that new technologies tend to reinforce, not undermine, entrenched power structures and humans’ tendency to be absolute rotters to one other.

The Fate Of A Nation Is On The Line In New Trailer For ‘Churchill’ Starring Brian Cox, Miranda Richardson, John Slattery, More

Winston Churchill is having a moment. The iconic British prime minster was portrayed winningly by John Lithgow in the first season of “The Crown,” and later this year, Gary Oldman will play the leader in Joe Wright‘s “Darkest Hour.” Coming right in between the two is the simply named “Churchill.”

Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (“The Railway Man“), the film sees Brian Cox stepping into the title role, playing the politician in his later years, who must grapple with the life and death decisions behind the D-Day landing at Normandy.

Sam Riley To Star As Playwright/Spy Christopher Marlowe In ‘A Dead Man In Deptford’

Round about 2003/2004, if you’d told those of us who were unlucky enough to see the now-forgotten Leeds indie band 10,000 Things, that the band’s frontman would become a genuine, fully-fledged movie star, we’d have laughed in your face, and had you swiftly committed to an asylum. But after his acclaimed turn as Ian Curtis in “Control,” Sam Riley has managed to graduate from post-Libertines no-hoper to honest-to-god leading man, with a brace of films on the way, including “Brighton Rock,” which premieres tonight at Toronto, the crime-thriller “13,” and a much-sought-after role in Walter Salles’ “On The Road.”

After that film, which is currently shooting, Riley will return to the U.K.

Disney Sets June 8, 2012 Release Date For ‘John Carter Of Mars’ & March 9, 2012 Bow For ‘Frankenweenie’

Walt Disney have set dates for two of their major tentpoles for the 2012 cinema season.

First up, Andrew Stanton’s ambitious “John Carter Of Mars” will hold down the summer with a June 8, 2012 slot. The film, which boasts a pretty stellar cast including Taylor Kitsch, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Bryan Cranston, Ciaran Hinds, James Purefoy, Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong and Daryl Sabara, is a live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough’s “John Carter of Mars” series, about a Civil War soldier who is transported to Mars and embarks on alien adventures.

Michael Giacchino, Oscar Winning Composer For ‘Up,’ To Score ‘John Carter Of Mars’

Michael Giacchino has cashed in his Oscar win for “Up” to grab the job of scoring the upcoming sci-fi adventure “John Carter Of Mars.”

‘Halloween 3-D’ on Hold, Thomas Haden Church & Mark Strong Join ‘John Carter Of Mars’

– Nikki Finke, via CHUD, are reporting that the Weinstein Company has shut down pre-production on the Patrick Lussier-directed “Halloween 3-D,” which was being pushed for a November start date. Finke reports that the principle reason for the delay was that the script was felt to be “rushing too fast,” although the company’s financial instability may have also played a part. Rob Zombie’s second film in the franchise will be re-released for midnight showing on October 31st, to coincide with the titular holiday.
