Because Sparks is not only a versatile art-pop band (chiefly brothers, Ron and Russel Mael), but they’re a highly eclectic, trailblazing rock group that’s fairly elusive and mysterious to a lot of people, even music connoisseurs. As Beck says in the documentary, one of the many famous admirers in the documentary, the highly influential Sparks, is likely your favorite band’s favorite band.

To call a portrait documentary an “affectionate tribute” to its lesser-known subject is usually redundant. That’s the whole point of adoring acknowledgment docs of this ilk— “shining a brighter spotlight” on [insert criminally undervalued subject here]. But Edgar Wright’s superb “The Sparks Brothers” documentary—about the inscrutable, feloniously overlooked cult art-pop band Sparks—radiates at such a vibrant, obsessive frequency of passion, it transcends the basic concept.

The folks over at Twitchfilm have gotten their hands on the Russian trailer for Sylvain Chomet’s first feature length film since his breakthrough debut, the excellent “Triplets Of Belleville.”

The first look we get at “The Illusionist” promises similar, gorgeous animation, but points to a more mature and heartwarming work than the decidedly wacky “Triplets Of Belleville.” According to IMDB the film follows a magician “whose thunder is being stolen by emerging rock stars.

Wes Anderson Directs Brad Pitt In French Fetishized Cellphone Ad

Wes Anderson reveals more of his all-things French fetish in this commercial for Japanese cellphone company Softbank Mobile starring Brad Pitt. The clips is inspired by Jacques Tati’s whimsical 1953 classic, “Mr. Hulot’s Holiday” and the song is (of course) France Gall’s “Poupée de cire poupée de son,” which was written by Serge Gainsbourg (c’mon Wes, this is her greatest hit, dig a little harder). The Arcade Fire started covering this song earlier this year too.
