If you’ve seen “A Star is Born” (and box office totals would suggest many of you have), then you understand how difficult it would be to imagine anyone else other than Bradley Cooper in the role of Jackson Maine. The writer-director-star is incredible as an aging rock star that comes across an incredibly talented singer at a bar. But according to Cooper, he originally had someone else in mind to play the role.

SXSW Review: ‘The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights’ Roars With Vitality

Charged with the spirit of generosity and inventiveness emblematic of their unprecedented cross-Canadian tour (a feat even the Nickelbacks of the world don’t bother with), Emmet Malloy’s “The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights” is a wonderfully compelling documentary on the candy-coated twosome.

Though music and (or in) film is ostensibly The Playlist’s raison d’etre, there’s no denying the topic has somewhat bored us in recent years. There’s only some many ways you can slice a music documentary and in the last few years, we’ve been feeling minor fatigue at some of the familiarity involved in many of these documentaries.

White Stripes Doc, ‘Under Great White Northern Lights’ To Hit Theaters Briefly In Select Cities

Whoops, we should have got to this sooner. The White Stripes documentary, “Under Great White Northern Lights,” has started screening in select cities around North America. Based on a cross Canada 2007 tour — and when we say “across,” we mean it — the pair covered the entire nation, even hitting wintry cities that not even most big Canadian acts bother to play (too cold, too far off the regular concert tour path).

Music video director Emmett Malloy (Silversun Pickups, Weezer, Wolfmother, Metallica, Avril Lavigne; one half of the video directing team the Malloys) captured the experience and distilled it into this 93 minute film.

Candy colored rock duo, The White Stripes toured across Canadian 2007 and when we say “across,” we mean it. The pair covered the entire nation, even hitting wintry cities that not even most big Canadian acts bother to play (too cold, too far off the regular concert tour path).

Each gig they played somewhere off-beat and did something special. As the TIFF site notes:

“That meant rocking out on a city bus in Winnipeg, a bowling alley in Saskatoon, a youth drop-in centre in Edmonton and a YMCA day camp in Toronto.

Jack White’s ‘It Might Get Loud’ Single Hits; Jimmy Page Says DVD Will Contain More Music

Last week we reported that David Guggenheim — director of the upcoming rock doc, “It Might Get Loud” — had coerced Jack White into writing a new song (“Fly Farm Blues”) for the film and then releasing it as a single, presumably so he could get some extra promotional mileage from music blogs obsessed with every fart White blows any which way (or something like that). Not a bad idea. The doc, as you’ve probably heard by now, also features U2’s The Edge and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page.

For the low, low price of $60 million Sony Pictures and Sony Music have finally acquired the rights to release “This Is It,” a live performance Michael Jackson film to be culled from the footage of his 2009 world tour rehearsals. Kenny Ortega (“High School Musical”) choreographed the show and will direct the film. You can see what might have been on October 30. [Variety]

Also out this October: Waits/Corbijn, a collaborative photo book from photog/director Anton Corbijn (“Control”) and Tom Waits that will document their three decades together in photos, including portraits and lyrics from four major Waits albums.

Jack White Solo Blues Track from ‘It Might Get Loud’ Gets Release

Collaborative rock doc “It Might Get Loud” is getting its own single. Jack White has written a song for the album called “Fly Farm Blues” that he’ll be releasing via his own Third Man Records (also home to his newest side project the Dead Weather) on August 11. The song was written at the behest of “It Might Get Loud” director David Guggenheim during the doc’s filming at a little studio haunt called Fly Farm.

The picture centers on three “rock guitar gods,” Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, U2’s The Edge, and The White Stripes’ Jack White, and is directed by Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim who helmed, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

The film hits theaters on August 14 in limited release via Sony Pictures Classics and we have an autographed poster (the one you see here) signed by Guggenheim to give away.

Jonathan Glazer’s Dead Weather Video: ‘Treat Me Like Your Mother’

We’ve gone on about this one a few times — the new Jonathan Glazer (“Sexy Beast”) directed short film/video for Dead Weather’s new single — and it debuted on Cinemax this weekend, but we gotta say, the anticipation build-up was better than the real thing. This is a bit of a let down. As Vulture writes, the clip features, “Alison Mosshart (day job: singing for the Kills) walk toward [Jack White of the White Stripes], unloading automatic weapons into each other’s faces and chests in what’s almost certainly meant to be some sort of metaphor about relationships or something.” Meh, the track isn’t all that either.

We mentioned this briefly last week. Jonathan Glazer (the filmmaker behind “Birth”and “Sexy Beast”) has directed the short film (music video) for Jack White’s new band with Alison Mosshart from the Kills, called The Dead Weather. Their new album Horehound can be heard in its entirely today here on their ILike page.

Glazer directed the short film for their latest single, “Treat Me Like Your Mother” and it premieres July 11th at 9:55pm on Cinemax.

Jonathan Glazer Directs New Creepy Dead Weather Video; Jack White To Appear At Comic-Con ’09

Wondering what lauded video director Jonathan Glazer has been up to directing the haunting drama, “Birth” in 2004 other then still not dazzling us with a new feature film?
Well, actually he does have his next feature-length project, “Under The Skin” happening, but in the meantime he directed the new music video for The Dead Weather, a musical side project led by Jack White and Allison Mosshart (The Kills). The video will premiere on Cinemax on July 11 front of the Angelina Jolie flick, “Wanted” and, judging from the eerie trailers, would be a suitable lead-in to action-flick.

A White Stripes Movie?

In a recent interview with Self-Titled magazine Jack White dropped the little bon mot that his Third Man Records, which recently released the Dead Weather album, will also be starting a film division. Oh and they’re working on a White Stripes movie. He tells Self-Titled, “The White Stripes are releasing a film this year, and when I go back home in a few days, I’m going to mix all the music for that, which is like 40 songs, so that’s going to take a lot of time.”

Of course the magazine failed to ask any follow up questions about it so we’re assuming, since it’s in conjunction with his record label, that it’s a tour film of some sort.

The AMPAS have announced the 49 song eligible to be nominated in the Best Original Song category at the Oscars.

Highlights include Bruce Springsteen eponymous cut from “The Wrestler,” Peter Gabriel’s “Down To The Earth for “Wall-E,” Zooey Deschanel and her Von Iva comrades (under the name Munchausen By Proxy) surprisingly having two songs eligible, Norah Jones’ “The Story,” from the otherwise unremarkable, “My Blueberry Nights,” Jon Brion’s “Little Person” for “Synecdoche, New York” and eligibility nods to Regina Spektor, Jenny Lewis, actor Jason Segel and M.I.A.

We (I) talked to Danny Boyle and M.I.A. about the “Slumdog Millionaire” soundtrack for MTV, the digital release of which comes out today (the physical disc hits December 23).

Nothing, super revelatory, but Boyle did tell us he’d work with Jack White of The Whites Stripes if given the chance. You’ll recall he wanted to work with White originally for “Slumdog.’ This is what Boyle told us in the MTV interview and why it didn’t happen.

Rock Doc ‘It Might Get Loud’ Coming To Theaters Summer 2009

“It Might Get Loud” is a documentary centering on three “rock guitar gods,” Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, U2’s The Edge, and The White Stripes’ Jack White.

Sony Pictures Classics has grabbed North American film distribution rights with a plan to roll it out in theaters Summer 2009 according to the Hollywood Reporter. We saw the film when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The doc, which traced each guitarist in the here-and-now about their techniques and relationship to the guitar, wasn’t mandatory viewing or anything, but if you’re a big fan of any of these three, it’s probably worth watching as it was fun to watch (the culminating scenes where they jam together are interesting too).

Sometimes you read something (and even report on it) and then you totally forget about it. Today we read something on Anne Thompson’s blog where she said, Danny Boyle originally wanted Jack White of the White Stripes to score, “Slumdog Millionaire,” but he couldn’t because he was unavailable at the time.

We knew this because we actually wrote about it briefly, waaay back in the day and back then it didn’t sound like a bad idea, in fact, abstractly, it’s a very cool concept.

You’ve already heard the terrible “Quantum of Solace” theme, “Another Way to Die,” by White Stripes frontman Jack Black and R&B soulstress, Alicia Keys. No see the video. Color us totally disinterested. When will a movie come out with some good music in it that’s not just score material? It’s famine over here at the Playlist lately, or maybe we’re just fuckin’ dead sick of Stuffthatwhitepeoplelike indie-rock, which seems to be the only thing contemporary pop or rock music that gets thrown into movies these days, and might we add, thrown in badly.

We had it up on an old story, but it got taken down, so we figure we’ll put it up one more time, but holy shit, the new Bond theme for “Quantum Of Solace,” By White Stripes’er Jack White and Alicia Keys is total ear gash.

We don’t mind either of these two, both are talented (yes, even Keys), but god, this might even be worse that Chris Cornell’s Bond theme if you can possibly imagine that.
