Charming and fleet-footed, with a dynamic sense of frisson and clever chutzpah, “Enola Holmes” is a compelling mystery and a sprightly adventure with a feminist streak that’s a perfect showcase for the winsome talents of “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown.

Set in and around the struggling eponymous club, in an untrendy quarter of modern-day Paris, it’s truly impressive the degree to which it succeeds: over its eight episodes, seven of which follow different individual members of The Eddy’s house band or someone intimately associated with it, it becomes a single, long, rambling number, full of detours and details that spotlight first this soloist, then the next, each riffing almost unrecognizably on the same themes, before touching back in with the ensemble.

The series, which comes from the minds of filmmakers Damien Chazelle, Alan Poul, and Jack Thorne, features a great cast, a beautiful setting, and, as you might expect from a Chazelle production, plenty of jazz.

As seen in the trailer for “The Eddy,” jazz is a big part of the series, but there’s plenty more going on in the new drama.

With the rise of “Game of Thrones,” as well as the success of films such as “The Chronicles of Narnia” and ‘Lord of the Rings,’ studios all around are trying to snatch up the rights for popular fantasy novels and turn them into sparkly new TV series.

And with the upcoming HBO/BBC co-production, “His Dark Materials,” producers Jane Tranter and Jack Thorne want fans to know that this is not a show that is going to drag out three novels over the course of 14 seasons.

But it’s a mark of how things have shifted now that it’s become a measure of success to have some kind of prestige TV project in the works — lauded and impossibly successful directors as different as J.J. Abrams, David O. Russell and Barry Jenkins are all developing small-screen projects alongside their movies, and a show like “Big Little Lies” attracts just as much attention, if not more so, than a multiplex hit.
