This past weekend, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut “Jack Goes Boating” began its limited rollout. The film finds Hoffman doing a triple threat of acting, directing and producing but he is buoyed by an ace cast in co-stars John Ortiz, Daphne Ruben-Vega and Amy Ryan. The film follows two working class couples in New York City — one coming together, one slowly disintegrating — and follows them as they navigate their fragile relationships.

We had a chance to speak with Philip Seymour Hoffman during a very busy press day for the film.

For the rest of 2010, the box office numbers have a chance to significantly alter the Oscar race. With the remaining films of ‘10 in play, the ones without unmanageable budgets are likely gambling for gold. As much as we like to think the Oscar voting happens in a bubble, those with ballots are strongly aware of what plays with audiences and what doesn’t, especially considering the extended nominees list is a format more generous to crowd-pleasers.

Even though it’s still officially summer, this week’s lineup has an autumnal feel, with solid dramas, awards bait, and even a well-crafted comedy to attract moviegoers. Four films are opening wide this week and the number one slot is wide open. The strongest contender is most likely the cops and robbers heist picture “The Town,” from director Ben Affleck. The film has very strong critical notices as does the charming teen comedy “Easy A,” which should have a shelf life for years as good films for teenagers are few and far between.

You may recall earlier this year we said the soundtrack to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut, “Jack Goes Boating,” could end up potentially being the indie-rock soundtrack of the year if its tracklist was any indication.

The disc feature Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, Cat Power, Goldfrapp and DeVotchKa and lands in stores September 14th, just a few days before the film hits theaters on September 17.

A relationship dramedy about two people who find each other in New York City while the couple that set them up are facing problems in their marriage, “Jack Goes Boating,” co-stars the lovely Amy Ryan, and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year where it received decent buzz.

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, “Jack Goes Boating,” the directorial debut by Philip Seymour Hoffman co-starring the always excellent Amy Ryan, got some decent buzz coming out of Park City. The Hollywood Reporter said the film is a “small, slender yet fond slice of life”, while the picture recalled “the warm ‘little people’ dramas of ’50s” according to Variety and the trailer certainly bears that out.

Grizzly Bear seem to be the new darlings of indie filmmaking. As we’ve previously reported, the Jay-Z approved indie group laid down the score to the Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams relationship drama, “Blue Valentine” which recently premiered to mostly good notices at Sundance. Well, that isn’t the only film at Park City this year with Pitchfork faves in the background.

The band’s publicist has confirmed that Philip Seymour Hoffman’s debut dramedy “Jack Goes Boating” about a fledgling couple and a marriage in crisis also features “5 or 6” Grizzly Bear tunes, but that none of them are new tracks and that Evan Lurie (yes, brother of the original hipster and Jim Jarmusch bud John Lurie) is the composer of the film’s score.

Two updates in a span of a few hours about Sundance? What can we say, it seems to be busier than ever in Park City this year, and so here are details on even more of the films that are earning attention of attendees:

The first sale of the Sundance Film Festival was by Paramount Vantage who scooped up the rights to “Waiting For Superman,” the latest documentary from Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth,” “It Might Get Loud”).

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s career has been more a case of swim than sink. He will continue in his attempts to stay above water by directing “Jack Goes Boating” for Overture Films, an adaptation of the Off Broadway play written by Bob Glaudini. Hoffman will also star in the film. The film is the first to emerge from a production deal between Overture and Hoffman’s production company, Cooper’s Town, last summer.

Hoffman, who can be seen currently in “Doubt”, will co-star with Amy Ryan.
