The tradition of isolation in cinema, either psychological, physical, or both, is rich and also, a rather modern phenomenon (you don’t see a lot of 1930s movies about people contemplating their existence in a tomb). But isolation in the age of pandemics and social distancing has taken on a new resonance and probably created a new kind of trauma that we’ll be considering the effects of for years.

Eddie Vedder Hitting The Road For Short ‘Into The Wild’ Tour

Eddie Vedder scored Sean Penn’s Oscar-snubbed film, “Into The Wild.” The gravely-voiced grunge crooner then released an album of said ‘Wild’ songs (with bonus tracks on ITunes-only edition). While he was snubbed by the Oscars, Vedder did win a Golden Globe for his songwriting efforts.

Now, the flannel-enthusiast will head out on the road for a brief jaunt in support of his “Into The Wild” album that has sold 243,000 copies according to SoundScan.

Oscar Snubs 2008: ‘Wild,’ Gangster, Jolie, Eddie Vedder Denied

Ok, we’re going a little overboard with the Oscar coverage. This will be the last one for a while.

What films got snubbed? Well, “snubbed” is a relative and fairly subjective term.

“Into the Wild,” really made a comeback at the SAG awards, but both Sean Penn as director, the film itself and Emile Hirsch all got locked out. In fact, it was snubbed nearly everywhere and we figured it would at least score an Best cinematography nod (maybe it’s all those lefty causes of Penn’s that piss people off).

Since we did our Cinematography picks last night we figured we’d drop our Oscar predictions as something to do to pass the time and hell, just for the record – so we can look wise or dumb depending on what goes down. Some of these will probably seem like no brainers, but truthfully, as we see it, the major awards are mostly set in stone.

Some label wants an Oscar nomination pretty badly. As we mentioned late last week, Eddie Vedder had shot a vid for the song from the “Into The Wild” soundtrack and here it is. The song has been nominated for a for a Grammy, a Golden Globe and the hope is, an Oscar. Consider this part of the public awareness campaign. The song is among those that will be eligible for an Oscar.

As we also mentioned last week, Sean Penn wanted Vedder to act in one of his films.

National Critics Awards Draw “Blood’; A Reading Of The Oscar Tea Leaves? Maybe Not

Daniel Plainview wasn’t kidding when he said,” I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed.” Paul Thomas Anderson’s epic oil drama “There Will Be Blood” keeps hogging up all the awards.

This time the grim American tale sucked up the top critics prize, the National Society of Film Critics for Best Film, Best Actor for the lead, Daniel Day-Lewis, Best Director for PTA and Best Cinematography.

The 42nd annual awards were given out by the NSFC, an association of 61 movie critics from across the country.

Eddie Vedder Shoots Video For ‘Wild’ Soundtrack Song; Wrote Aggresive L.A. Punk Song To Get Sean Penn Off His Case About Acting

So husky-voiced grunge rocker Eddie Vedder is shooting his first video – the track “Guaranteed,” a song he wrote for Sean Penn’s “Into The Wild” film and a song that’s been nominated for a Grammy, a Golden Globe and will be eligible for an Oscar nomination if the Academy deems it worthy enough.

According to Billboard, the clip has been directed by Marc Rocco and will premiere Jan. 7 at 6 a.m. ET on VH1.com.

Sean Penn’s Divorce Frees Him To Head Cannes 2008 Jury; Yet Another ‘Wild’ Soundtrack Disc

Ok divorce isn’t funny or pretty, but you’ve obviously heard that Sean Penn is calling it quits with his wife of ten years, Robin Wright Penn.

On the plus side, this frees up Penn’s schedule which will be needed when he heads the 61 annual Cannes Film Festival Jury later this year (May 14-25).

The festival, which has already been accused of having left-wing leanings (see the Palme D’or top prize for “Fahrenheit 9/11” in 2004 for a recent example), will likely receive more flack for putting in a pink0-commie like Penn in charge of the festival (often this is code for: why no love for mainstream American movies and all this fondness for foreign art films?

Golden Globe nominations are in this morning as of 8:45 a.m. and as some might of figured, the sweeping grandeur of Joe Wright’s adaptation of the Ian McEwan novel, “Atonement” swept up taking seven nominations.

The Best Picture category didn’t look all that surprising either, as recent critical favorites like “There Will Be Blood,” “No Country For Old Men” found their spots as well as early fall favorites, “Michael Clayton” and “American Gangster,” but “Easter Promises,” really?

Eddie Vedder Soundtracking Howard Zinn; Val Kilmer Shopping Around New Rock Record

What, no collaboration? Eddie Vedder, the throaty grunge singer who’s banjo yodelling fueled Sean Penn’s teen-angst-in-the-woods film, “Into The Wild,” is getting back on the music soundtracks train (he also contributed music to Phil Donahue’s Iraq War doc too).

According to Billboard, Veddy, along with R&B smoothster John Legend (that’s a pair) are contributing music to the documentary miniseries based on historian-author Howard Zinn’s 1980 book “A People’s History of the United States” (a book that Matt Damon’s character says will” blow your hair back” in “Good Will Hunting”).

‘Into The Wild’ Nabs Top Prize At Last Night’s Gotham Awards

Those of you who thought Sean Penn’s “Into The Wild” has been overlooked will be happy to hear that the film won Best Feature award at last night’s IFP 17th annual Gotham Awards.

The film, whose budget was too big too be considered for the recent Independent Spirit Award nominations beat out “I’m Not There,” “Margot At The Wedding” and “The Namesake.”

The grossly overlooked music-industry satirical indie, “Great World of Sound” by Craig Zobel is having a great late-fall awards season.

Let’s point out something that the folks at SlashFilm have already pointed out (with lots of disclaimers to cover their butt: “we may have pointed out how to download these, but we would never!”).

In their piece about “American Gangster” leaking online, there’s a curious part at the bottom that almost has nothing to do with the piece other than the concept of things leaking early. But they’ve noticed that the Paramount Vantage site has uploaded free pdf versions of five screenplays to a public “For Your Consideration” website.

Ok, She Didn’ Know Who The Pixies Were, But Jena Malone’s Indie-Rock Career Keeps On Truckin’; Only Minor Traces Of Pretentiousness Found

A new piece in Nylon magazine has a piece on actress Jena Malone’s burgeoning indie career in their latest issue called, “The Ballad of Jena Malone” (not yet online). We have to admit we were more skeptical than usual when we heard that Malone was recording an album for Social Registry, but damn, if her material is pretty interesting, eclectic and not what we expected.

The track “Tested Dry” which is available on her myspace page sounds almost spontaneous and broken, not unlike early and sparse Devendra Banhart and then another track, “New Year Come” sounds like a Micheal Andrews track straight out of Miranda July‘s “Me And You And Everyone We Know” film.

Here’s a little trick. What can we say about these films that we haven’t already? Honestly, we sort of hate writing reviews, so here’s some capsule reviews for some recent films we’ve seen. [ed. we haven’t written about all of them].

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
(dir. Andrew Dominik. Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck)
A moody, thoughtful anti-western, the lost in limbo (it was shot two years ago and has been tinkered with ever since) ‘Assassination’ illustrates the best and worst of wandering, Terrence Malick-like pictures – it’s meditative and is angelically shot, but it also lasts almost three hours and could stand some serious editing.

“The first priority for me [in casting] is affection. I have to care about them from the time I hire them to the time I finish editing their performance,” Sean Penn told Charlie Rose about bringing in equally-minded people to bring a piece of film work together. “Nobody ever stopped their devotion to this story.”

A.O Scott’s New York Times review is favorable to the film, but he doesn’t particularly like Vedder’s songs.

New ‘Southland Tales’ Trailer And Eddie Vedder Both Surf

The new and official trailer for Richard Kelly’s long-awaited “Southland Tales” (the guy who did “Donnie Darko”) features the Pixies’ “Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf Version)”- first seen on the “Pump Up The Volume” soundtrack in 1990. This new trailer (which sort of cements the reputation of this film being disjointed, ludicrous and awful) also features Moby’s “Blue Paper,” and the Elbow track “Forget Myself.” Justin Timberlake narrates. [Yahoo]

Magenta-haired tart and UK “soul” singer Joss Stone will perform a cover of Nat King Cole’s classic 1964 ballad “L-O-V-E” for the soundtrack to the short film for Chanel, entitled “Coco Mademoiselle,” which stars Oscar-nominated puckerface actress Keira Knightley.

Entertainment Weekly scored a little chat with Eddie Vedder about being bff with Sean Penn and scoring the actor/director’s new film, “Into The Wild.” (news that we broke first, if we can remind you for the 4 millionth time).

How did their collaboration come about? Well, their bosom buddies and Vedder was game as soon as Penn called. “I might have thought about [signing on to score the soundtrack] differently if it [wasn’t Penn],” he told EW.

The Playlist first exclusively reported Eddie Vedder’s work on the “Into The Wild” Soundtrack. And we also first told you about Corin Tucker ex of Sleater-Kinney duet with Eddie Vedder on, “Hard Sun,” first single to his near-solo album, “Into The Wild” soundtrack.
