We’re deep into the week before Christmas and still cutting a swath through our Best/Worst/It’s Complicated Year-End coverage, most of which we hope you’ve all read and enjoyed, or at least been engaged by (it’s okay, you can disagree). This year, a few documentaries made it onto our collective 25 Best Films of the Year list; in 2016, it seems that many of the achievements in non-fiction cinema have rendered moot the notion of keeping narrative and documentary separate for evaluation.

The master director, and one of the best documentary filmmakers working today, has once again got his passport out for “Into The Inferno,” for what looks like another perfectly Herzog-ian journey into the unknown.

Well, everyone must be reading the same tea leaves at this altitude because it’s simply the truth. TELLURIDE – At face value, the title of Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer’s new documentary “Into The Inferno” and its one sentence description (“An exploration of active volcanoes around world.”) is slightly misleading. It insinuates that the film takes you into the depths of volcanoes like a major scientific expedition. “Inferno” does that to some extent, but Herzog and Oppenheimer are equally interested in exploring the cultural impact of volcanoes around the world.

The Venice Film Festival has kicked off, and now that we move into the Labor Day weekend, it’s time for the Telluride Film Festival. Quaint, peaceful and full of cinephiles — filmmakers like Alexander Payne and Werner Herzog often show up even if they’re not promoting movies — the lineup for this year’s event has been revealed.

World premieres, though they are never technically called that at Telluride include: Clint Eastwood’s flight and disaster drama, “Sully” starring Tom Hanks; Benedict Andrews’ “Una” starring Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn; the boxing drama, “Bleed For This” featuring Miles Teller; Barry Jenkins’ much-anticipated follow-up to “Medicine For Melancholy,” the three-decade spanning drama, “Moonlight”; Werner Herzog’s latest documentary, “Into The Inferno”; “Maudie” by Aisling Walsh; François Ozon’s “Frantz” and “Wakefield” from director Robin Swicord.

So far, 2016 has been one of most disappointing years for movies we can remember, and the fall film-festival season couldn’t come fast enough. The premieres will come thick and fast over the next few days, with Telluride getting in the mix on Friday, but we’re still a week away from one of the biggest events of them all, the Toronto International Film Festival.
