Trailer: Michel Gondry, Leos Carax & Joon-ho Bong’s ‘Tokyo!’

You haven’t forgotten about the omnibus film “Tôkyô!” have you? The picture consists of three shorts, one by Michel Gondry, and the other two directors on the project are South Korean filmmaker Joon-ho Bong (“The Host”) and French director Leos Carax — who hasn’t made a film since 1999’s “Pola X” (and Scott Walker scored) — and the trailer has finally arrived.

The film comes out March 6, and we’ve already shown you one version of the poster, some clips from the film and the fact that Gondry’s former bandmate in the French pop group, Oui Oui, guitarist/singer Étienne Charry, composed the score for the directors’ “Interior Design” vignette.

‘Tokyo!’ Featuring Michel Gondry Short, ‘Interior Design,’ Coming Out March 6, 2009

On Friday evening we revealed that Michel Gondry’s former bandmate in the French pop group, Oui Oui, guitarist/singer Étienne Charry, composed the score for the directors’ “Interior Design” segment in the triptych vignettes film “Tôkyô!”

We found something on Rotten Tomatoes that said the film was coming out November 30 and asked, could this be true? We hoped someone would write us and tell us more and our wish came true. A publicist for “Tôkyô!” saw our post and wrote us, turns out the film is coming out March 6, 2009 in the U.S.

Étienne Charry, Michel Gondry’s Former Singer Of Oui Oui Wrote Score For His ‘Interior Design’ Segment In ‘Tokyo!’ Film Coming Out Nov 30?

We all remember that before Michel Gondry was a filmmaker he was a drummer in the French pop band Oui Oui, yes? Gondry got his start making lo-fi music videos for his band that became progressively more ambitious. Then Björk called — always one with a keen eye for up-and-coming, cutting edge artists — for her video “Human Behavior” and Gondry basically never looked back.

Well, it looks like he’s gone back to his roots a little bit by having Oui Oui guitarist/singer Étienne Charry compose the score for Gondry’s “Interior Design” segment in the three-part vignettes film, “Tokyo!” that screened earlier this year at Cannes and the Woodstock Film Festival (where we missed it by a day).

First ‘Toyko!’ Review Hits From Cannes; Gondry’s Short “Arguably The Best”

A Variety report from Cannes has one of the first reviews of “Tokyo!” – the three-tiered vignette film featuring directors Michel Gondry, Joon-ho Bong and Leos Carax (his first film since 1999’s “Pola X,” a movie scored by the great Scott Walker).

The review says the film is “uneven, but enjoyable and likens it to a “nastier Eastern sibling to ‘Paris, Je T’aime,’ ” (another vignettes film released last year).

“First and arguably best of the bunch is Gondry’s deviously titled “Interior Design,” which opens on a dark and stormy night as young, self-deluded aspiring filmmaker Akira (Ryo Kase) and his supportive but directionless g.f.

Remember Michel Gondry’s short “Interior Design” “Hiroko & Akira in Tokyo” about a woman who turns into a chair that’s a short within the larger film “Tokyo!” (Fellow French director Leos Carax – “Pola X” – is doing the short, “Merde,” and South-Korean filmmaker Joon-ho Bong is also part of the project). Well, that film has a trailer now.

Michel Gondry’s ‘Tôkyô!’ Vignette About A Woman Who Turns Into A Chair

While we haven’t exactly looked hard, we haven’t seen many concrete details on kooky French director Michel Gondry’s “Interior Design,” other than it’s 1/3 of a series of shorts for the film “Tôkyô!” (which also features directors Joon-ho Bong – segment “Shaking Tokyo”- and Leos Carax – segment “Merde”).

In the recent issue of GQ, more details of “Interior Design” come to light. The screenplay was co-written with his girlfriend Gabrielle Bell and is about a girl who turns into a chair, and it’s based on a comic that she drew.
