Already teased at Disney’s D23 Expo this past August, Pixar is making some minor revisions to its upcoming TV slate. Pixar Animation Studios revealed a sneak peek at two new upcoming Pixar TV series—the first of its kind for the company— the limited, four-part series “Dream Productions,” a spin-off of “Inside Out,” and the all-new original series “Win or Lose” featuring the intertwined stories of different characters as they each prepare for their big championship softball game.

It’s no secret that theaters are struggling, and 2024 was shaping up to be another disappointing year. You know it’s a rough year when we’re already at the end of June, and “Dune: Part Two” is the highest grossing film worldwide ($711 million). Or should we say “was” the highest grossing film, thanks to the monster success of Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”

We are going to take a wild guess that when you first heard the news that 2015’s Oscar-winning “Inside Out” was getting a follow up you immediately thought, “Oh, no. Not a sequel to a beloved animated movie. This can’t be good.” Well, if it’s from Pixar, three “Toy Story” sequels, “Finding Dory,” and “Incredibles 2” are pretty strong evidence that it might not just be good, but potentially even better than the original.

Lately, the news over at Pixar has been more about cost-cutting and focusing on established brands. Not necessarily the stuff you’d hope to see from one of the most creative studios on the planet. How quickly times change. There once was an era when Pixar didn’t think it needed sequels and could just go from original story to original story. In fact, in 2016, Pixar’s president Jim Morris said there were no Pixar sequel plans after Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles 2,” something of a response to the underwhelming reception to “Cars 2” and, to a lesser degree, “Toy Story 3.

After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the film industry is still trying to find its sea legs in 2024. While the box office has been lagging, and there’s been no “Super Mario Bros,” “Barbie,” or “Oppenheimer” so far this year, to be fair, most of those hits didn’t arrive until the summer (minus the Nintendo adaptation). While it’s been a relatively slow year at the domestic box office, there have been hits in “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong,”

And, while the movie industry seemingly slowed down production last year because of said strikes, there’s absolutely no lack of content this year.

After “Elemental” was the studio’s biggest hit since “Toy Story 4,” Pixar hopes to continue its commercial bounce-back with another sequel, “Inside Out 2.” Smart move on Pixar’s part: the 2015 original film was the animation studio’s last true critical darling, making several critical top 10 lists that year. To be fair, other recent Pixar films have scored well with critics too, but “Inside Out 2” still needs fresh take on its premise for everyone to take it seriously.

Sure, a little thing called the COVID-19 pandemic kept a couple of titles out of theaters, but this is the current Pixar story for five straight films, including this year’s “Lightyear.” Pixar needs a winner, and they need one now.
