The Deep Focus podcast is back, and this week, we have filmmaker Neill Blomkamp,  known for “District 9,” “Elysium,” and blending sci-fi with socio-political commentary and envelope-pushing technology. Blomkamp’s latest film, “Demonic,” does all that with a little bit of a twist. It’s his first supernatural horror film that takes him outside of his comfort zone of sci-fi, and it’s seemingly less heavy on the socio-political observation.

First Tyler Perry swatted away Tom Cruise, and now he’s overpowered Tom Hanks: For the second straight week, “Boo! A Madea Halloween” has topped the box office. The latest franchise entry saw only a 41% drop as it headed into its second weekend, adding $16.6 million to the bottom line. This doesn’t particularly change much of the narrative around ‘Madea Halloween,’ as it’s still on track to finish among the best in the series “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion” ($63 million domestic) and “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection” ($65 million domestic), and possibly overtake them, but still finish behind the all-time topper “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” ($91 million domestic).

If nothing else, Ron Howard seems determined to make at least one good film based on Dan Brown’s bestselling Robert Langdon book series. That’s perhaps the only real explanation for why he returned to the director’s chair for “Inferno,” the follow to 2006’s “The Da Vinci Code” and 2009’s largely-forgotten continuation “Angels & Demons.” Much like “Alex Cross” and, most recently, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” and “The Girl on the Train,” something is, once again, sorely lost in the transition from page-to-screen.

As Sony Pictures gears up to release “Inferno,” they’ve supplied a handy email address for the Professor of Religious Symbology and Art History, who is currently out of office, but “on a path for answers.” Obviously.

Tom Hanks reprises his role in the Ron Howard directed movie that this time sees Langdon getting some Jason Bourne like amnesia, while trying to stop a virus from wiping out the majority of the Earth’s population, in a plot that somehow involves Dante’s Inferno.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. So why is it that there’s still part of us that’s curious to see “Inferno?” The first of Ron Howard’s Robert Langdon films, “The Da Vinci Code,” starring Tom Hanks as Dan Brown’s globe-trotting professor, wasn’t just idiotic, it was incredibly boring, despite an A-list cast. And follow-up “Angels & Demons” was, if not worse, at least on a similar level of badness.

As Paramount has shown with Jack Ryan and the upcoming TV series starring John Krasinski, there are some characters whose potential and brand value are so good, it’s worth trying to keep them alive. And so it goes with Robert Langdon, the lead character in Dan Brown‘s best-selling airport paperback thrillers, who we haven’t seen on the big screen since 2009’s “Angels & Demons,” which didn’t earn quite the same numbers as the $758 million worldwide gross of “The Da Vinci Code,” but still did $485 million globally.
