Watch: New Trailer For Buzzed-About Indie Sci-Fi Film ‘Monsters’

Few indie films this year have had the buzz around them of Gareth Edwards’ feature debut “Monsters.” Ever since it debuted at SXSW this year, the super-low-budget monster movie has picked up great reviews and seems to have real potential to become a crossover hit.

Set six years after a crashed NASA probe unleashed giant monsters in Central America, the film follows a journalist who agrees to help escort an American tourist through the ‘infected zone.’ An international trailer for the film appeared a little while ago, but, courtesy of Magnet and Apple, the first domestic trailer went up last night, and you can check it out below.

Rebecca Hall, Rose Byrne, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Deborah Ann Woll All Testing To Join Casey Affleck In ‘The F Word’

One of our favorite romantic comedy scripts of recent years is “The F-Word,” by Elan Mastai. Following Wallace and Chantry, two twentysomethings who meet at a party, and hit it off, but Chantry has a long-term boyfriend, and so the pair decide to remain friends, but struggle with their mutual attraction. It’s a familiar premise, but extremely well executed, with well-drawn, likable characters, and dotted with some ingenious animated sequences. Essentially, it’s like “500 Days Of Summer,” but without the female lead being a paper-thin cypher.

‘In Search Of A Midnight Kiss’ Helmer To Direct ‘The F-Word’

Update: Production Weekly tweets that Andy Samburg is eyeing the role of Wallace.

We weren’t that keen on “In Search Of A Midnight Kiss” when it was released in the summer of 2008. With a very self-conscious tip of the hat to Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset,” and Claire Denis “Vendredi Soir,” it was, in places, quite irritating and amateurish, but it showed a great feel for Los Angeles, and enough solid filmmaking that we thought director Alex Holdridge would be one to watch.

Opening This Weekend Reviews: ‘Frozen River,’ ‘ In Search Of A Midnight Kiss’

We reviewed these two indies a few weeks ago, here they are in basically the same form, possibly a few tweaks with perspective, but our thoughts haven’t changed on them and neither have the grades. Both these film open in limited New York, Los Angeles on August 1. Presumably (and hopefully) they expand after that.

Capsule Reviews: ‘Patti Smith: Dream Of Life,’ Herzog’s ‘Encounters,’ ‘Midnight Kiss’ & ‘Polanski: Wanted Desires’

The Playlist has seen to many damn movies lately and not all of them are worth full-length reviews. That and the fact, if we don’t write them out now, we probably never will. Here’s some capsule reviews.

Patti Smith: Dream of Life – dir. Steven Sebring
Unlike most hagiographic rock documentaries, Sebring’s ‘Dream,’ is a much more elliptical rendering of a seminal musicians life. Shot in mostly stark black and white, eschewing the touchstone moments and greatest hits of Smith’s story, instead the punk poet intimately narrates and wanders the soft and remembered haze of her memory.
