Pulling our best Jeffrey Wells, since he seems to ask and it generally pays off…

Anyone have an in to Martin McDonagh’s new play “A Behanding in Spokane” currently playing in New York? McDonagh is the genius behind “The Pillowman” (best. play. ever, man — no really) and the director/writer behind “In Bruges.” His eighth play, ‘Spokane’ stars Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Anthony Mackie, and Zoe Kazan and is currently on Broadway running until June 6.

I would like to start off by sort of introducing myself a little bit. My name is Mickey Pagels and I am a 17 year-old dance student from Chicago who also loves movies [ed. blatant lies]. The Playlist gives me more than ample opportunity to write about current cinema, which is great for when I have spare time.

10. “Hamlet 2”
For me, “Hamlet 2” was a surprise comedy hit for me, just because I thought it looked terrible.

Ooops, we already posted a bunch of acceptance speeches from last night’s 66th Annual Golden Globes, but one that we forgot and also loved, was Colin Farrell’s acceptance for Best Actor in the Comedy section for “In Bruges.” It was a great, humble and self-deprecating speech (check the self-flagellating drug dig) and his excellent performance in Martin McDonagh’s film (which artfully balanced vulnerability and comedy) as a suicidal hitman proved that he’s returned to be taken seriously as an actor and not just a tabloid dunderhead.

2008 is obviously still on the brain and at will be at least for the next week if not longer. Here’s ten films we thought were grossly underrated. We were going to title this the 10 Most Underrated Films of 2008, but someone would have surely balked, only because we haven’t posted our top 20 list yet. These were definitely under-appreciated in our book though.

“In Bruges“
Colin Farell and Brendan Gleeson starred as contract killers sent to the medieval Belgian city of Bruges after a botched hit at the behest of their loose cannon boss Ralph Fiennes.

Whenever awards bodies such as the British Independent Film Awards release their nominations, I have no choice but to question where ‘independent’ factor comes into play. Nevertheless, their thoughtful championing of the underdog(s) year in and year out is reason enough to let such thoughts slip. This year, Mike Leigh’s disarming “Happy-Go-Lucky” received a paltry 3 nominations, same as James Marsh’s highly regarded doc “Man on Wire” and Mark Herman’s so-so “The Boy in Striped Pyjamas” (in which I found Vera Farmiga excellent, and she received a Best Actress nom here too), while “Son of Rambow,” “Somers Town” and “The Duchess” snatched 4 apiece, which is laughable if only because Leigh’s film is so obviously a shutout.

(Our belated review) Does the world need another gangster film about hitman with feelings that riff on of pop culture topics and smoke targets while dropping clever witticisms? Hell no, and despite all appearances Martin McDonagh’s debut feature-length film “In Bruges” thankfully avoids most of these now-tired and eye-rolling cliches.

If you feared this film would fall prey to the quick, rock n’ roll stylish cuts and camera tricks of Guy Ritchie you can rest easy.
