Few films at TIFF 2021 were as genre-bending and defiantly original as the Senegalese thriller “Saloum.” Congolese director Jean Luc Herbulot mixes styles as diverse as spaghetti westerns, monster movies, and samurai dramas in the movie without overshadowing the story’s West African backdrop. Sound exciting to anyone else? Well, IFC Midnight thinks so. They’re so high on the film that they’re giving it a theatrical run in NYC and Los Angeles.

Home invasion stories are a mainstay in the thriller genre. Being hunted in your own house while you’re alone is the stuff of nightmares and is a primal fear for many people. There’s a reason why home invasion thrillers are always hitting theaters. But in the new film, “See For Me,” the typical home invasion thriller is flipped on its head thanks to its lead character.

As seen in the trailer for “See For Me,” the film follows the story of Sophie, a young woman who is just hoping for a relaxing time house-sitting in a secluded mansion.

There’s an undeniable air of unease wafting about the somewhat claustrophobic bathroom where “We Need to Do Something” largely occurs. From the opening aerial shots of the small town setting soundtracked by an ominous tornado siren to the tension present amongst the cast’s central four family members seeking shelter from the storm, it’s hard not to feel even the slightest bit uncomfortable as the old school horror font of the credits transition into a situation initially believed to be nothing more than severe weather that clearly hides something far more sinister.

Sometimes you just want to get away from things, and REM sleep– rapid eye movement sleep– can be a nice escape and rest. That’s the premise of “Come True,” a new IFC Midnight horror film about sleep paralysis. Starring Landon Liboiron, Skylar Radzion, and Julia Sarah Stone, “Come True” centers on a teenage girl (Stone) looking for a reprieve from her recurring nightmares. She submits to a university sleep study, but soon realizes she’s become the conduit to a frightening discovery.

A girl tip-toes into a basement. Hesitantly, the camera creeps past withering flowers on the window sill and dolls scattered on the dank, unlit floor. Something’s making noises in the world’s largest furnace room, and an unfortunate babysitter is going to find out the source the hard way. Cut to an ancient creature (or hungry mom?) devouring a newborn. A pointless cry for help is juxtaposed with a shot of witchcraft symbols carved into the door above.

“Stupid slut. I hate you!” a jock yells, leaving his beguiling band geek lover by the side of the road.

The geek-slut-tease in question, Carolyn Harper, fires back, “I hate you, too! I hate you with all my heart right now!” She is still in full, feather-hatted regalia, and suddenly bleeding profusely from the forehead. The jock has stolen her glasses, which glow ominously like the C-shaped cut she scratched into his forehead mere moments ago.

One of my absolute favorite movies at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival was Stephen Fingleton‘s “The Survivalist,” a pragmatic post-apocalyptic film about the lengths people will go to survive. Unlike many films in the genre — which tends to focus on either spectacle or heavy-handed parables explaining why humanity is the true monster — “The Survivalist” offers audiences a future where our own standards of morality have long been put to rest.
