As May arrives, that means summer is here, at least for movies. And it means the theatrical rollout of tentpoles and blockbuster event films, which start out strong this year with the romantic-comedy actioner “The Fall Guy.” It’s a big month for major releases both for the bigger budgeted features but also for indie films that have gained strong word of mouth through festival selections. “I Saw the TV Glow” and “Furiosa” are both worthy of major attention, the former having garnered raves out of its Sundance premieres.

How confident are Paramount Pictures and John Krasinski in their new family-friendly fantasy movie, “IF”? Well, for one, Krasinski was so inspired by the idea—which he wrote and presumably is inspired by his own children— he decided to put his “A Quiet Place” franchise aside for the minute to direct this story about imaginary friends (I.F., get it?). And for two, it has a prime summer release date of May 17, 2024, which means Paramount has huge confidence in it.

Last week, Marvel Studios pulled “Deadpool 3” from its May 3, 2024 release date, leading many to speculate if more studios would soon shuffle their schedules. And as the SAG-AFTRA strike crosses the 100-day barrier, several blockbusters on next year’s release calendar for Paramount move to different spots. Is the biggest name moving? Deadline reports that “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two” will now open on May 23, 2025, instead of June 28, 2024, as that film needs to resume production.

It seems that every year another fresh crop of filmmakers make their debut movies, and a high proportion are coming-of-age stories. A sadly low percentage, however, are any good, which is why this week brings us significant reason to rejoice: First-time filmmaker Kelly Fremon Craig brings us the adorable, sprightly “The Edge Of Seventeen.” In many ways this year’s “The Diary Of A Teenage Girl” in being both the debut of an exciting new female filmmaker and a funny, fresh, newly insightful take on the teen-movie genre, ‘Seventeen’ perhaps does not reinvent the wheel in the way that Marielle Heller‘s film did, but it’s such a bouncy picture, centered around such a tremendously relatable turn from Hailee Steinfeld, that to disparage it as a result would be a little like critiquing a puppy.

With wind in their long hair and drugs stowed in their motorbikes, a couple of born-to-be-wild men blaze a path on the American highway in the opening credits of “Easy Rider.” It’s a quintessential cinematic moment that epitomized the general mood of an entire generation. American 1960s counterculture was a watershed for free speech and socio-politically charged expression from the younger generation. A plethora of movements would rise out of the period, giving voice to the oppressed and the disenfranchised while flipping off The Man as a direct reaction to the disastrous Vietnam War.
