There’s going to be some cinephiles that don’t want to hear it, but “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is very much in the Oscar race. While the backlash is continuing to build around the Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award winner (which has generally a very good augur of awards season success), the Screen Actors Guild wasn’t having it.

Martin McDonagh‘s provocative drama/black comedy led the night winning for Best Ensemble, Best Leading Female for Frances McDormand, and Best Supporting Male for Sam Rockwell.

The American Cinema Editors revealed their nominees for the 68th Annual ACE Eddie Awards. to kick off the New Year, which will certainly see Oscar prognosticators adjusting their predictions accordingly.

While the ACE Eddie Awards obviously allow for more contenders with more categories at play, it’s nice to see “Blade Runner 2049,” “Baby Driver,” and “The Shape Of Water” get some recognition, after being mostly shut out so far this awards season.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the seven finalists for the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar and there were some surprising omissions. Left off the list were  “It,” “Logan,” Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “The Post,” “Blade Runner: 2049” and “Beauty and the Beast,” among others.  The biggest snub of all, however, has to be Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.”

The Best Picture contender is expected to compete with “Dunkirk” for the most nominations for a single picture and to many this category was a given.

“Coco” stayed on top at the multiplex, with the Pixar movie pulling in $18 million.

Sufjan Stevens already has two, gorgeous songs — “Visions Of Gideon” and “Mystery Of Love” — in one of the best movies of the year, “Call Me By Your Name.” Had things gone differently, the prolific singer/songwriting would have had another tune in an awards season film.

Stevens has released the simply named “Tonya Harding,” which as you guessed, is about the disgraced figure skater, who is getting a sympathetic portrayal in the excellent “I, Tonya” starring Margot Robbie.

Margot Robbie and Sebastian Stan are ready to set the industry ablaze with their new film “I, Tonya,” based on the story of Tonya Harding’s life, figure skating career and subsequent “incident” involving Nancy Kerrigan. Director Craig Gillespie said he had his reservations about doing the film, having done some bio-pics in the past but, “the minute I heard it was starring Margot Robbie I just thought ‘this is so intriguing’ – the combination of her and the script I had to do it!” The cast appeared as part of the TimesTalks ScreenTimes series to discuss the film, what it took to prepare for their roles and how the film’s themes reflect our current society.

IFP announced the 2017 Gotham Awards nominations this morning and it was filled with the usual amount of surprises and snubs that you’d expect for juried honors determined by committees of just five or so critics and media members.

“Get Out” earned the most nominations with four including Best Feature, Breakthrough Director (Jordan Peele), Best Screenplay (Peele) and Best Actor (Daniel Kaluuya).  “The Florida Project” earned three nominations including Best Feature, Best Actor (Willem Dafoe) and Breakthrough Actor (Brooklynn Prince).

The Grolsch People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival gives awards season films a big boost. This year the surprise winner was Martin McDonagh‘s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which certainly elevates its profile in the months to come. But another favored pic, that many expected to take the prize, isn’t going to be forgotten.

Craig Gillespie‘s “I, Tonya“— which was the runner-up for the People’s Choice Award — has now been set for limited release on December 8th in New York and Los Angeles by Neon.
