While The Criterion Collection is generally known for their high-class releases of revered foreign and arthouse films, the boutique label knows how to have fun too. And the company is leading their January wave of titles with everyone’s favorite movie about detention.

John Hughes‘ classic “The Breakfast Club” is coming to The Criterion Collection, with an extra side of bacon. Besides arriving in a new 4K restoration, and being packed with all sorts of extras including commentary by Anthony Michael Hall and Judd Nelson, and interviews with cast members, the highlight is 50 minutes of previously unseen deleted and extended scenes.

The weekend of big awards being handed started last night in France with the César Awards, and likely setting the tone for the next two nights, politics stepped into the spotlight. But first, lets get the business part of the equation out of the way.

As December rolls along (only twenty more shopping days until Christmas!) the awards keeping coming, and over the weekend, it was the folks at the British Independent Film Awards turn to hand out the honors. In case you’re wondering, this will have little to no impact on how Oscar voting will go, but if anything, it’s another chance to shout out some movies that will likely not get recognized by the Academy.

Sure, you might already know that Ken Loach‘s latest film “I, Daniel Blake” walked away from the Cannes Film Festival this spring with the Palme d’Or, but what you might not know is that it also earned the another illustrious prize on the Croisette: the Palm DogManitarian Award. The honor was bestowed on the picture “for showcasing a three-legged dog named Shae,” and that’s as good a reason to watch this movie as any.

There were plenty of movies at this year’s Cannes Film Festival that seemed like viable options for the Palme d’Or — Andrea Arnold‘s “American Honey“; Jim Jarmusch‘s “Paterson“; Maren Ade‘s “Toni Erdmann” — but the George Miller-led jury surprisingly went with Ken Loach‘s “I, Daniel Blake.” The movie wasn’t universally acclaimed on the Croisette (though our critic quite liked the “touching film“) but nonetheless it walked away with the big prize, and that puts a nice shine on the picture as it heads to theaters.
