It doesn’t look like Disney will be the only studio pursuing live-action versions of the most iconic films in its animation library. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Universal Pictures wants to develop a live-action adaptation of their beloved fantasy-adventure “How To Train Your Dragon” movies from DreamWorks Animation. THR adds that Dean DeBlois returns to oversee this version, and he’ll write, direct, and produce the live-action adaptation for a release date of March 14, 2025.

Writer-director Dean DeBlois spoke of his intentions to make a trilogy of “How to Train Your Dragon” films even before the release of 2014’s “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” claiming that this second installment introduced characters and scenarios that were meant to lay the groundwork for movie number three. The payoff finally arrives next year with “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” a production that has experienced multiple delays since its initial 2016 slot but promises a definitive conclusion to the fantasy saga, including an explanation for why dragons are no longer present in this world.

It’s sort of remarkable, the ways that animation on the big screen has changed in the past two decades or so. In the early ’90s, the game was pretty much entirely owned by Disney’s hand-drawn animated fairy tales, which were hugely successful but almost entirely seen as kids’ stuff, with the occasional Don Bluth or Ralph Bakshi effort winning some eyes but not really competing; and the beginning of an interesting scene in Japan that largely failed to crossover to mainstream audiences stateside.

The biggest surprise hit of the year? Or at least the one with no existing franchise film before it? Paramount/ Dreamworks Animations’ “How to Train Your Dragon” without question. The film is currently #8 on the worldwide box-office grosses of 2010 having grossed $492.6 million worldwide and $217.6 million domestically. Not bad numbers at all for a film that isn’t part two or three of anything (the only bigger, “brand new” not based on a franchise was “Alice In Wonderland,” but arguably the story is world renowned and had a built in audience regardless of Johnny Depp or Tim Burton).

Most people like to play “doomsday prognosticator” when a film doesn’t open to unrealistic expectations. These people will tell you that “Shrek Forever After” disappointed at the box office this weekend, and they are right, considering the last film opened to over $120 million and the second had a $108 opening weekend. Most people saw the third “Shrek” film (sandwiched between “Spider-Man 3” and “Pirates Of The Caribbean”) drop like a stone after that opening and saw the writing on the wall.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Iron Man’ Builds New Arc Reactor, Fends Off Doughy Oscar Winner With Arrows

Not exactly a photo finish, but no one expected anything to challenge “Iron Man 2” for the next couple of weeks, and here it looks like it might fall easily from the top slot next week. The superhero sequel took a precipitous drop in week two, though it still significantly outpaces its predecessor at the same point two years ago. Expectations are out of hand sometimes, so it was ridiculous when people were forecasting a $500 million domestic gross, only to be disappointed that the movie isn’t dominating the way the most successful films of all time would be.

It looks like Marvel can close up shop and cancel all plans for their shared universe. “Iron Man 2” has failed, loudly and embarrassingly. By not achieving the biggest box office weekend of all time, and only ranking fifth overall (with only a meager $300 million worldwide total), “Iron Man 2” is now an irrelevant curio that will no longer be worth discussion by next week when the expected four quadrant mega-blockbuster “Robin Hood” hits screens.

50/50 chances are, if you’re reading this, you were an enabler this weekend. Either you saw “A Nightmare On Elm Street,” or you let a friend see it, putting money in the creatively bankrupt pockets of Platinum Dunes producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, maybe the least imaginative moneymakers in Hollywood. There are several negative ways to spin this, as “Nightmare”‘s $32 million take is well below last year’s $40 mil. take for “Friday the 13th.” Also, according to those who make a living pettily disputing studio expenditures (it’s not our living, so HAH), the “Nightmare” budget ballooned out of control after intense reshoots.

No surprises here. Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation has announced that a sequel to “How To Train Your Dragon” is in the works with the studio aiming for a 2013 release.

Weekend Box Office: On Slow Weekend, ‘The Back-Up Plan’ Serves As Back-Up Plan To ‘Dragon’

In the slowest weekend of the moviegoing year, “How To Train Your Dragon” has managed to best all prognostications and blast its way back to first place, now in its fifth week. There was very little dropoff from the surprising fourth-week frame, and at this point “Dragon,” numbers-wise still a modest performer for its genre, should surpass Dreamworks’ last ‘toon, “Monsters Vs. Aliens.” In an off-season, that’s a big reason for celebration, and we hope it inspires many other sexually suggestive kid’s film titles, like “The Boy With The Bony Snake” and “Learning To Cope With Your Hairy Cave.”

At #2 was CBS Films’ “The Back-Up Plan,” which did mediocre business, and yet stronger numbers than most could except.

Let’s just say that it wasn’t quite the brutal beating that Hit Girl and Big Daddy would have liked. Matthew Vaughn’s hyperviolent “Kick-Ass” drew blood from fellow opener “Death at a Funeral” and holdover “Date Night,” but it wasn’t enough to hold back the barely PG-rated “How to Train Your Dragon.” The DreamWorks animated film is now in its fourth week, but that didn’t stop it from bringing in another $20 million, taking its total to $159 million.

While many saw its opening weekend as something of a disappointment, “How To Train Your Dragons” has held on remarkably well, even in the face of 3D competition from “Clash of the Titans.” It might be optimistic, but we’d like to think it’s down to the film being surprisingly excellent — we caught up with it last week, and it’s easily the best of the Dreamworks Animation films and the first time that the studio has been able to hold its head high next to Pixar.

“Clash of the Titans” proved less mighty in its second week, falling just behind action-comedy “Date Night” by $200,000 (do god-fighting warriors cry?). The Steve Carell-Tina Fey film earned $27.1 million, which is a solid opening for its genre, particularly compared to the $20.7 million first week of “The Bounty Hunter.” It looks like it pays off to have leads who are actually funny, even if your script isn’t. The Fox film is in good shape to make back its $55 million production budget, particularly with its solid reviews and good word of mouth.

Box Office: ‘Clash of the Titans’ Continues 3D Dominance with $61 Million

Summer got off to an early start with the special-effects-laden snorefest “Clash of the Titans” taking in $61 million at the box office this weekend. It’s not a bad start, especially for a film that should do well overseas, but it’s not a “300”-level success. The Zack Snyder testosterone-fueled film made $71 million in its opening weekend, without getting a boost from 3D tickets (though it did get IMAX money). Plus, “300” was made for a seemingly small $65 million, while “Clash” cost almost twice as much to produce.

Box Office: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Flies To The Top With $43 Million

DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” rode a wave of good reviews and 3D mania (what is this, the ’50s?) to bring in a solid $ 43.3 million this weekend. Its per-screen average of $10,678 isn’t too shabby either. William Castle would be so proud. We’re almost in April, and only three non-3D films have held the top spot so far in 2010: “Valentine’s Day,” “Shutter Island,” and “Dear John.” However, unlike “Alice in Wonderland” (which likely kept “Dragon” from even higher numbers), at least the Dreamworks film is about more than just wacky visuals.
