The nominations are in for the 92nd annual Academy Awards, and if you’ve been waiting to see what was actually getting nominated before plunking down your hard-earned cash and growling—“One for ‘Bombshell,’ please!”— well, the wait is over. And the catch-up countdown clock is already ticking due to this year’s (thankfully) abbreviated awards season, the ceremony is less than four weeks away.

The 2010s saw the return of a number of forgotten trends: tiny sunglasses, hating “Star Wars,” and – most importantly – the word “horny.” The once juvenile, decidedly-male word has shifted into something greater: more gender-woke, more surreal. “Horny” still refers, of course, to sex, desirous hunger, thirstiness, and this image (and this one too). But it has also evolved to feature many more implications and describes any number of feelings – excitement, transgression, titillation, and intrigue.

The guild award nominations are rolling in and today The Cinema Audio Society revealed their nominees for the 2020 CAS Awards which honor Sound Mixing in a number of fields. The movie nominees were led by “Ford v. Ferrari,” “Joker,” “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” “Rocketman” and “The Irishman.” The one-hour television nominees featured “Game of Thrones,” “Jack Ryan,” “Stranger Things,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Peaky Blinders.”

It should be noted that “The Lion King’s” nomination in the Animated Film category is the second time this week Disney’s “non-animated” film has earned recognition in an animated category.

The 2020 nominees for the 47th Annie Awards have been announced and Hollywood’s animators, in this case the members of ASIFA-Hollywood,  have made some intriguing choices.  On the film side, Walt Disney Animation’s “Frozen 2” and LAIKA’s “Missing Link” led all nominees with 8 nods.  Netflix’s “Klaus” earned seven nods while Netflix’s “I Lost My Body,” “Toy Story 4,” and “How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” earned six each.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the qualifying contenders for the Animated Feature Film Oscar this year and the category is flush with international and independently made submissions. Of course, monster hits such as pressumed frontrunner “Toy Story 4” are in the mix, but so are celebrated smaller films such as Cannes standouts “I Lost My Body” and “The Last Fiction.” This year’s nominees could surprise as a majority of the studio fare released over the past 12 months had issues inspiring critics or audiences.

We talk about great franchise performers at the box office, normally the films feature various folks with superpowers, a possessed doll or little child, or maybe Tom Cruise running and running. But one of the most profitable and consistent franchises of the last 15 years doesn’t feature any of that. Instead, it features Tyler Perry dressed as a grandma getting in various adventures and hijinks. And this weekend, the ‘Madea’ franchise came to a close, just as popular as it was a decade ago.

With the Oscars coming later tonight, many film fans have their minds set on the best that 2018 had to offer. However, this weekend’s box office domestic top 10 finally has gotten rid of its 2018 offerings, and in doing so, we’re starting to get a peek at what might be some of the bigger films of the first half of 2019. And while we don’t know what the rest of the year is going to bring (our guess is a lot of superheroes at the top of the box office), we do know that people still love their animated dragon films.
