The January blahs continued this weekend, with only one major movie headed into wide release. And it was the final chapter in a franchise that audiences seemed to have abandoned long ago.

“The Maze Runner: The Death Cure” knocked off reigning champ “Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle” with $23.5 million. It’s a weak showing in the last installment in the YA series. The original “The Maze Runner” opened with $32 million, the followup “The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” launched with $30 million, but it’s clear that Fox could never ramp up this series to a wider audience.

This weekend, some folks are busy doing their last minute holiday shopping and others, who are far more organized, have time to squeeze in a movie. And the force was with one movie in particular this weekend….

Predictably, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” cruised into the top slot with $68.4 million, but it’s worth taking a closer look at the numbers. The somewhat controversial entry in the saga saw a sharp second week audience drop of 68.9%, the largest decline of any of the Disney era “Star Wars” films (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” only fell 39.8% in week two, while “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” dropped 58.7%).

The Oscars aren’t exactly the first thing on Hollywood’s mind at the moment, and yet, the campaigns must continue because in about two months the nominations will be unveiled. And upstart distributor Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures is hoping to edge into the race with “Hostiles.”

Directed by Scott Cooper (“Black Mass,” “Crazy Heart“) and led by Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, the story is set in 1892, and follows an Army captain who agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief through dangerous territory.

AFI Fest is less than three weeks away and today the annual awards season event revealed its three centerpiece galas.  To say it’s looking like a stranger than usual AFI Fest is sort of an understatement.

As previously announced, Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” will open the festival on Thursday, Nov. 9.  It’s the first opening night film that’s not a world premiere in at least five years. The closing night film is Ridley Scott’s “All The Money In The World” which will have its world premiere on Nov.

The Telluride Film Festival is in the rear-view mirror and the Venice Film Festival will finish up this week and that means they’ll both give way to the Toronto International Film Festival, easily the largest film festival in North America, and in terms of sheer size and volume, probably the largest film festival in the world. TIFF usually houses around 300 films or so, and it’s such a wide and varied event, you can curate it to your tastes: you could stick with glossy mainstream picks with stars, indie up-and-comers, Midnight Madness pictures, foreign films, documentaries, experimental films, and shorts if you wish.

And with buzz already swirling around Christian Bale‘s performance, a pretty damn terrific new trailer is here to stoke anticipation.

The crew assembled here is pretty incredible with Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi, Adam Beach, Ben Foster, Jesse Plemons, Rory Cochrane, and Q’orianka Kilcher rounding out the ensemble cast, with cinematography by Masanobu Takayanagi (“Spotlight,” “Out Of The Furnace”) and a score by Max Richter (“The Leftovers,” “Waltz With Bashir“).

The Telluride Film Festival has earned its reputation as one of the best-curated film events in the world and this year’s lineup is no exception.
