Netflix has quietly been carving out a space for adult-driven animation with critical darlings like “Bojack Horseman,” “F for Family,” and “Big Mouth” leading the way by making year-end lists and even landing Emmy nominations. It makes sense that this section of the streaming service would eventually get to something like “Hoops,” a depressing new comedy about a foul-mouthed high school basketball coach who hates everything about his life, but especially despises the collection of unathletic losers he’s been asked to turn into a winning team.

Earlier this year, Ben Affleck starred in “The Way Back” about a down-on-his-luck former athlete returning to the sport he loves, basketball, to whip a losing high school team into shape on their quest for glory and his own personal redemption. “Hoops” is basically that same story, but animated and with lots more sex and curse words. Oh and seemingly no redemption.

In Hoops, we follow the story of Ben Hopkins, the son of a legendary basketball icon that is hoping to use high school coaching as a springboard to bigger, better things, such as an infinity pool and tons of oral sex.

You have the classic underdog story like “Rocky.” There’s also the “coach learns about life from his players” story as we saw recently with the film “The Way Back.” And then, on a more lighthearted path, there’s the “misfit team led by a grouchy coach” story that was classically shown in “The Bad News Bears” and now, the upcoming Netflix series, “Hoops.”
