The weekend after the Christmas holiday is an odd one for the box office. Outside of a couple of new films debuting on the actual Christmas holiday, the top 10 is largely the same as last weekend, with many of the films only dropping marginally or gaining a little bit versus seven days ago. So, needless to say, “Aquaman” is still the big story, outside of a few special December 25th films.

Here’s a sentence that we haven’t really written this year – Netflix actually turned down the chance to buy a major film.

One of the more odd film strategies for Netflix has been its way of purchasing the distribution rights to films that studios don’t have confidence in. Most famously, this happened with Paramount, when the streaming service purchased the distribution rights to two films, “The Cloverfield Paradox” and “Annihilation” (internationally), and released them on its platform without a theatrical run.

In all honesty, all it would take to solve the case of why this comedy doesn’t hit the mark is to just take a look at whose name isn’t listed under “director.” The missing man is not Professor Moriarty this time around.

It’s frankly something of a crime that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have only made two movies together: 2006’s uneven “Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby” and 2008’s riotous “Step Brothers.” And while there has been half-hearted, on and off chatter about a sequel to the latter, it has never really gained much momentum, and likely never will (especially as Hollywood saw the sequels to both “Zoolander” and “Anchorman” disappointment).
