Can the Golden Globes return to its once lofty perch among Hollywood’s favorite awards shows? That placement on the winner’s mantlepiece was always shakey, but up until 2021 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual shindig was, at its worst, a beloved post-New Year’s industry party. Now, after being dressed down for its business practices and a lack of specific POC inclusion in its ranks (that lead to a non-televised ceremony earlier this year), the HFPA is hoping after a membership overall that all can be forgiven.

This was probably not the Golden Globes ceremony that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Dick Clark Productions, and NBC were dreaming of just weeks ago. And, no, we’re not even referring to the controversy over the HFPA’s lack of Black membership or questionable practices within the organization itself (which was mentioned numerous times by the hosts, nominees, and winners). No, despite the fact we’re almost 12 months into television programs having to use multiple zoom interfaces to pull of interviews or remotes due to the COVD-19 pandemic the Globes telecast started off with more embarrassing gaffes than you’d catch in a local high school homeroom newscast.

Like many awards shows, the Golden Globes already announced it would push its telecast to line up with Oscar’s new pandemic-delayed April date. The Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted ceremony is locked in for a Sunday, February 28th broadcast. What was unclear is where the eligibility regarding film qualifications would lie. You won’t be surprised at the inevitable outcome.

Movies will need to be released in theaters by no later than February 28 to qualify for the 2020 Golden Globes.

The shut down of the world’s theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic has already affected the usually packed awards season calendar. The Oscars changed their calendar first, moving to April 25 with other major awards shows following suit. And this morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the Golden Globes will jump on the Academy Awards’ original date, February 28.

Despite locking up Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts earlier this year, the HFPA had not announced a date for the 2021 ceremony.

In what can only be recognized as a sign that good things can happen in this new decade, a decision of extreme desperation or, possibly, both, NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return to host the 2021 Golden Globe Awards.  This announcement was made less than a week after Ricky Gervais hosted the Globes for the “final” time and the ratings took a major downturn from the previous year.

In news that will bring joy to some viewers and tears to others, Ricky Gervais is officially hosting the Golden Globes again. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, NBC and Dick Clark Productions announced the Gervais will host the 77th Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 5. He insists his fifth time as emcee will be his last.

Ellen DeGeneres, a three-time Golden Globe nominee, will be awarded the achievement for contributions to the television medium during the 77th Golden Globes telecast in January.

In a statement, Lorenzo Soria, President of the HFPA noted, “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is delighted to honor Ellen DeGeneres with the Carol Burnett Award.

He’s won two Oscars, a Kennedy Center honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, seven Emmy Awards, two SAG Awards, an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, a PGA Lifetime Achievement Award, an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award and four Golden Globe Awards, among other honors.  Now, Tom Hanks will be feted by the latter with the HFPA’s Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2020 Golden Globes ceremony in January. A ceremony that may also find him nominated for his role as Fred Rogers in Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighbhorhood.”

The global film community is in a strange place and, frankly, that’s impacting everything.  The advent of streaming giants hasn’t led to an increase of distribution for quality films as expected and in the U.S., at least, the industry is fretting over audiences only heading to their local multiplex for anything associated with a Disney or Marvel title card.  The latter might be a bit of an exaggeration (or not), but it’s a tension that’s being felt pretty much everywhere.

The HFPA and NBC have determined the airdate for the 77th Golden Globes and they haven’t been scared off by an earlier Oscars telecast date.  The 2020 Globes will take place on Sunday, Jan. 5.  That will make it the fourth telecast in a row to take place on the first Sunday after New Year’s Day.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in August that the 2020 Oscars will take place on Feb.

Word leaked this morning that two films that many considered slam dunks for the Golden Globes Musical or Comedy categories were submitting as Dramas instead.  And, no surprise, even in a competitive season such as this, some of the overreaction on social media was a bit much.

As of Wednesday, October 10th, Warner Bros.’ box office and critical hit “A Star Is Born” and 20th Century Fox and New Regency’s potential crowdpleaser “Bohemian Rhapsody” appear to be submitting in the Drama category.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association still hasn’t set a broadcaster for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, but there is officially a date.  As expected, the organization revealed the 76th edition of the Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, Jan. 6.  The nominations will be announced a month earlier on Thursday, December 6.

The telecast should once again pop up on NBC, but the HFPA is still in negotiations with the network.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the date for the 75th Golden Globes telecast and it looks like it will duplicate last year’s influential Oscar strategy.

The 2018 edition of the awards show where movies and television come together will be held on Sunday, Jan. 7 and, as always, at the famed Beverly Hilton. This year’s Golden Globes were held on Jan. 8 and because of a later timeframe for Academy voting meant that it took place not one, but five full days before Oscar ballots were due.
