When was the last time you saw a long-haired burnout help a damsel in distress?

In the first clip from Spencer Susser’s forthcoming film “Hesher,” a thrift store clothed Natalie Portman finds herself in a potentially hairy incident only to be rescued by a quick thinking Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It’s our first real look at Gordon-Levitt and Portman in the film that also stars Rainn Wilson. In the film, Gordon-Levitt plays the titular anarchist who helps a young kid (Devin Brouchu) deal with a personal loss.

New Photos: Spencer Susser’s Dark Comedy ‘Hesher’ Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Natalie Portman & Rainn Wilson

Here’s a new look at Spencer Susser’s directorial debut “Hesher” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Natalie Portman and Rainn Wilson.

The star-studded film debuted at Sundance to mixed reviews but with Gordon-Levitt playing the titular havoc-wreaking Hesher and Portman in a reported career-best supporting performance, we’re still relatively excited by the prospect of the film. Low key distributors Newmarket Films picked the film up post-Sundance but, considering their recent track record of films like “Creation,” “Agora” and ‘The Nines,” we’ll have to come in with caution.

Update: So ‘Hesher’ Has Been Retitled ‘Rebel’ Then? Nope

Looking up info for another story on the Nu Image/Millenium Films website, we stumbled across what appears to be a new poster and title for Spencer Susser’s formerly (?) titled drama “Hesher,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Natalie Portman and Rainn Wilson.

Now seemingly (and boringly) titled “Rebel,” the film was acquired out of Sundance by Newmarket Films who have a habit of picking up leftovers that no one else wants. Their recent slate which has included films such as “The Nines,” “Agora,” “Death Of A President,” and this year’s awful “Creation” speaks for itself, and while we love the talent involved in “Rebel,” the mixed reviews it received at Sundance and the minor distributor it has lined up doesn’t fill us with great confidence.

U.S. Trailer For Nash Edgerton’s Neo-Noir Thriller ‘The Square’

Here is the U.S. trailer for Nash Edgerton’s Australian neo-noir thriller “The Square” which was acquired by Bob Berney’s Apparition earlier this year.

The film is co-written by brother Joel Edgerton (the upcoming “The Thing” remake) and stars David Roberts and Clare van der Boom as an adulterous couple whose scheming leads to arson, blackmail and murder. Edgerton also co-stars alongside Anthony Hayes and Peter Phelps in the dark, moody affair which serves as a strong debut for Edgerton behind the camera after years as a stuntman on the likes of the ‘Star Wars’ prequels and the ‘Matrix’ trilogy.

Two updates in a span of a few hours about Sundance? What can we say, it seems to be busier than ever in Park City this year, and so here are details on even more of the films that are earning attention of attendees:

The first sale of the Sundance Film Festival was by Paramount Vantage who scooped up the rights to “Waiting For Superman,” the latest documentary from Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth,” “It Might Get Loud”).

We won’t be attending Sundance this year (what else is new) but for all those who are, we thought we’d help you out by listing the dozen and or so films worth checking out. Of course, they’re predominantly films already floating around our radar but there’s always the “An Education”-type films of the world that can come out of nowhere. Nevertheless, here are they are in alphabetical order:

Diego Luna’s directorial debut follows a young boy who returns to a father-less home and must take over the patriarchal head of the household role.

Sundance First Look: Michael Winterbottom’s ‘The Killer Inside Me,’ Spencer Susser’s ‘Hesher’

The Sundance website keeps on giving, this time with the first look at Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me” starring Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba.

The following synopsis raves on about Affleck’s performance which doesn’t surprise us, his a supreme talent. The page also informs us that film comes in at 148 minutes which is just shy of two and a half hours.

Based on the novel by legendary pulp writer Jim Thompson, “The Killer Inside Me” tells the story of handsome, charming, unassuming small-town deputy sheriff Lou Ford, who has a bunch of problems.

Sundance 2010: In Competition Preview

With the benefit of a year’s hindsight, this year’s Sundance was a particularly strong one. Many of the premieres there, the likes of “The Cove,” “Precious,” “Big Fan,” “Humpday,” “Sin Nombre,” “(500) Days of Summer,” “An Education,” “Bronson,” “Moon,” “In The Loop,” “The Messenger” and “Adventureland,” set the tone for the rest of the year, well into the upcoming awards season. Sundance announced their 2010 In Competition line up on Wednesday (with out of competition films announced Thursday – which we will be getting too shortly), and there’s plenty that sounds interesting, although as ever, these are mostly unknown quantities.

A new poster for Todd Phillip’s “The Hangover” has been unveiled. Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, the film is set for release June 5th. [Cinematical]

Tom Hanks has revealed that work is well under way for the third installment of the “Toy Story” franchise: “I have been in and done three big complete recording sessions and will probably have at least one more to do, possibly in about eight months.
