It’s been a rough year. With the recession ending for some people (not us!), the divisions caused by inane topics like the mosque in downtown Manhattan and the specter of doom hanging over us in the shape of the GOP’s return to power, audiences have to feel pummeled by DEADLY SERIOUS ISSUES. What better time for a “Jackass” movie to come along? The opening number reflects the fact that demand probably wasn’t that much higher than for previous installments – the 3D surcharge plus the huge Friday numbers that trailed off, suggest as much.

A quiet week with only two films opening in wide release, and strangely, not a horror film in sight as we approach Halloween. First up is the Bruce Willis old-guys-and-guns vehicle “Red,” which is basically a slightly classier version of August’s “The Expendables” and about as good. Next up is “Jackass 3D,” the latest entry in the venerable franchise, which should take the top spot at the box office this weekend, especially with the inflated 3D ticket prices.

In “Hereafter,” three stories of mortality are told. The first one we learn concerns Marie (Cecile de France), a journalist on vacation in Indonesia. The movie has barely begun when she is swept up in a violent tsunami, one that fulfills the bloodless requirement for PG-13, but is otherwise absolutely harrowing. It’s impossible to understand what really happened during the real-life events depicted in the film, but even with computer generated effects, there is a unsettling universal sensation this sequence captures.

“Hatchet II” had the potential to mark a new era of cinema when the slasher sequel, which failed to gain an R Rating from the MPAA, was picked up for limited release by AMC. But, after just days on release, it was unexpectedly pulled, without AMC expressing any meaningful explanation as to why they made the decision. Adam Green, director of both “Hatchet” releases has reacted to the decision, issuing a statement of his own.

Warner Bros. has done some slight tweaking and re-arranging to their October calendar.

Clint Eastwood’s meditation on death, “Hereafter,” will now open in New York City, Los Angeles and Toronto on October 15th before going wide on October 22nd. The film, which Eastwood calls his “chick flick,” was written by Peter Morgan (“The Queen,” “Frost/Nixon”) and follows three plotlines: Matt Damon plays a psychic in San Francisco who can’t connect emotionally with his girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard) and wants nothing to do with his powers; Cecile DeFrance plays a French TV journalist/talk show host who has a near death experience in the 2004 Tsunami and the third character is a young boy whose twin brother dies in an accident (played by unknowns Frankie and George McClaren).

While we were we pleased to see a director seriously tackle issues of spirituality without necessarily addressing religion as Clint Eastwood does in “Hereafter,” we ultimately called the film a “compromised effort” after seeing it at TIFF.

Just as Woody Allen keeps depressingly reiterating his desire to leave behind a legacy of quantity over quality, America’s other favorite Great Director, Clint Eastwood, now also seems intent on putting out as many movies as he possibly can before he heads for the hereafter. The strategy paid off in spades around the first half of the last decade when, after over five years of misfires like “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and “Blood Work,” the filmmaker reasserted his formalist and dramatic chops, first with the operatic police saga “Mystic River” in 2003, and then in a powerhouse return to the screen a year later, with his Best Picture winner “Million Dollar Baby.” For a minute there, it looked like Eastwood had returned to the glory days of his mid-’90s artistic high, seemingly recreating the muscular/melancholy diptych of his “A Perfect World” and “The Bridges of Madison County.”

Eastwood would manage to leverage his triumphant return into another career-defining work (if not maybe one of his best), the ‘Iwo Jima’ twosome “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letter from Iwo Jima,” then spend the next few years, like Allen, pumping out a string of duds, including last year’s ham-fisted Obama allegory “Invictus” and the hysterical cluster-fuck that is “Changeling.” The most frustrating thing about both these films is that, unlike the ‘Iwo Jima’ block, you can’t really blame their flaws on Clint’s screenwriters exclusively—”Invictus” climaxes in one long sports cliche that grossly undercuts its attempted emphasis on communal catharsis, and “Changeling” is a wretched cocktail of tonal fissures and narrative digressions, moral inconsistencies and truckloads of didactic tedium.

TIFF has announced a number of high-profile films to their already healthy lineup that is set to unspool in just a few weeks.

EW just gave us a first look at Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter” last Friday and now the New York Film Festival has announced that the interconnected, near-death-experiences drama will close the fete on October 10th.

NYFF has already announced its opening night film, David Fincher’s “The Social Network,” and its centerpiece film, Julie Taymor’s “The Tempest,” and under some new creative management, the festival is really flexing its muscles this year. The move is not a total surprise in that it has an existing relationship with Eastwood and premiered “Changeling” in 2008.

Though Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter” has been called a supernatural-esque thriller by the trades, we’ve read the script and that’s not really the case. It’s more of an interconnected tale of grieving/mourning about those that deal with death and tragedies in their lives.

Courtesy of the latest print edition of EW (not yet online, hat tip to one our readers for the scan) we now have our first look at the film. Speaking with magazine, Eastwood himself seems to play down the initial assumptions about the film saying, “I like to think of it as my chick flick.

Clint Eastwood’s supernatural drama “Hereafter” will now hit theaters October 22nd through usual Eastwood collaborators, Warner Bros.

The film, starring Matt Damon, Cécile de France and Bryce Dallas Howard among others, was scribed by Peter Morgan and follows three concurrent stories involving an American factory worker with the ability to communicate with the dead; a young British boy looking to contact his deceased twin; and a French journalist coping with a near-death experience from the 2004 tsunami.

Just a few more days to go until the official lineup for the 63rd Annual Cannes Film Festival is unveiled, but speculation continues to run rampant in what is being called a “very difficult, complicated year” by festival director Thierry Fremaux.

First up, what we can tell you is Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter,” Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” and Gus Van Sant’s still untitled new film (once called, “Restless“) are definitely not going to be headed to the south of France.

— Tempter of Spider-Man, daughter of Richie and Nicole Kidman substitute Bryce Dallas Howard has signed on to the currently-filming Clint Eastwood drama “Hereafter.” There’s no official word on who she’ll play, but from the script, it’s most likely to be ‘Melanie,’ a potential love interest for Matt Damon’s character – not a huge role, but a key part for a very important central scene. Cecile De France and Lyndsey Marshal also star.

— Not for lack of trying, but Steve Coogan’s yet to fully translate his success with British TV comedies to mainstream cinema, despite brilliant performances in Michael Winterbottom’s “24 Hour Party People” and “A Cock and Bull Story.” But, along with his villainous role in Adam McKay’s “The Other Guys,” Coogan’s finally close to bringing his trademark character Alan Partridge, a failed chat show host, to the big screen.

Here’s an unremarkable first look of Justin Timberlake on the set of David Fincher’s “The Social Network” as Napster founding president Sean Parker. Since Parker always had curls, it looks like Timberlake is going back to his N’Sync faux-jheri curls look. Congratulations, Justin.

-As was pretty much figured from day one, considering their successful work on “The Wrestler” and the fact it was mentioned in the trades from the beginning Fox Searchlight is in talks to distribute Darren Aronofsky’s supernatural ballet film, “Black Swan.” It’s surely all but a done deal by now.

— Tahar Rahim, the star of Jacques Audiard’s hotly tipped “A Prophet,” will play the antagonist, a Gaelic prince, in Kevin MacDonald’s Roman epic “The Eagle of the Ninth,” currently filming in Scotland. Ramin joins Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland and Mark Strong in the tale, based on the classic children’s novel by Rosemary Sutcliffe, of a centurion who travels to Scotland to search for the legendary Ninth Legion, who disappeared there 20 years previously.

79-year-old Clint Eastwood is just simply not slowing down. Last year he had two films released in 2008, the child-stolen, courtroom drama, “Changeling,” and the grumpy-old-man-befriends-Korean-kids feel-doe’r, “Gran Torino.”

Obviously he’s already got “Invictus” in the can — we just finished the script, and it does have Oscar written all over it; more on that later — and evidently he and Matt Damon (pictured above on the set of the South African-set Mandela drama) got on well, because Eastwood’s already announced his follow-up, “Hereafter,” a supernatural thriller that’s evidently not much of a thriller (Movieline calls it, “quiet drama about three people trying to figure out what, if anything, exists after death”), with Damon attached.

Riding high on his virtuosic performance in “The Informant!,” comes the news that Matt Damon will star in his “Invictus” director Clint Eastwood’s next project, “Hereafter.” The news dropped yesterday as a small mention in this USA Today profile on Damon.

The Peter Morgan (“Frost/Nixon“) scribed script had been picked up by Spielberg at DreamWorks/Paramount in March 2008, and he held onto it when those two companies parted ways.
