That doesn’t mean the previous ones are terrible–there is serious love for Guillermo del Toro’s first two–but it looks like “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” might be our first attempt at what a comic book-accurate ‘Hellboy’ film would look like.

As seen in the trailer, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” takes place in the ‘50s and follows the story of the BPRD as they’re tasked with taking on a supernatural evil known as the Crooked Man.

When Guillermo del Toro was involved, the franchise was less horror and more fantasy, showing off del Toro’s penchant for creating memorable creatures. Then, back in 2019, with Neil Marshall behind the camera and David Harbour in the lead role, the film became an R-rated spectacle with huge effects and lots of lore.

And no, the 2019 reboot didn’t do well at all with critics or fans. But here we are, with yet another reboot. And according to the filmmaker behind the new version, this reboot is going to follow a very specific tone and style which sets it apart from the previous iterations of the character on the big screen.

However, when we started to learn more about the new film, excitement built with the idea that the franchise was going to embrace its more horrific roots and present a version of the character we have yet to see. And earlier this year, that “Hellboy” was released and we really did get a new version of the franchise that wasn’t seen in the del Toro films — a truly bad “Hellboy.”

Now, courtesy of Yahoo, we have a video that shows Guillermo del Toro explaining the very specific, unique tone he attempted with his two “Hellboy” films.

In fact, a decade ago, before he donned the Hawkeye costume, the actor was part of a few failed attempts to launch himself into a franchise. And according to Renner, one of those films could have been “Hellboy.”

Way back in 2004, Guillermo del Toro released “Hellboy” and quickly earned himself some major credibility for fans of genre films, as he was coming off a successful gig on “Blade II.” And while the role of Hellboy was always Ron Perlman, Jeremy Renner was actually approached for the role of Agent Myers (who ended up being played by Rupert Evans).

The “Hellboy” reboot starring David Harbour was a disaster. I know, I know, that’s controversial considering its stellar reviews and massive box office haul. Wait, who am I kidding? That film was a dumpster fire in April, earning a worldwide gross of $22 million and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 17%. But Harbour is here to drop some knowledge on the fans — those are the type of numbers that probably won’t lead to a sequel.

One of 2019’s biggest film failures, critically, financially, and speculatively, is most definitely “Hellboy.” The Neil Marshall-directed reboot of the popular comic book series, as well as the film series from Guillermo del Toro, was dead on arrival when it was released in April.

With a modest budget (by comic book film standards) of only $50 million, the new film didn’t have to make $1 billion to be deemed a huge success. However, after its domestic run, the film is now sitting at a dismal $21 million. Combined with the terrible 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling that critics generally disliked the film, “Hellboy” is not going to be the highlight of star David Harbour’s IMDB.

First up, “The Conjuring” series keeps posting results. The sixth film in the series (‘Conjuring 3’ doesn’t come out until 2020), “The Curse of La Llorona,” a horror spin-off from the series won the weekend singlehandedly with a very nice $26.5 million; even better when you consider the movie cost $9 million to make.

You know, right after a major premiere, the Monday after a monster opening weekend at the box office, or when they win some prestigious award. But what we don’t think about are those days when you devoted months of your life to a project, have that project hyped up beyond belief among fans, and then hits the box office with a critical and commercial thud.

However, none of the newcomers was able to topple “Shazam” and steal the crown as box office champion, especially the film that many thought would contend for the spot – “Hellboy.”

In its second weekend, Warner Bros.’ “Shazam” fell a respectable -53% in its second weekend and earned $25 million.

Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro and star Ron Perlman brought “Hellboy” to life in two entertaining films that brought joy to a lot of audiences, but their mooted trilogy-capper was scrapped in favor of a reboot with supposedly better financial optics.

Twelve years after the successful first two installments, starring Ron Perlman and directed by Guillermo del Toro, the biggest, baddest, and reddest superhero returns in this reboot with David Harbour in the leading role and director Neil Marshall (“The Descent”) at the helm, making this his first feature film in nine years (after some successful TV directing stints, including some Emmy award nominated work on some epic episodes of “Game of Thrones”).

Lovecraft adaptation “At The Mountains Of Madness” to a more faithful take on Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion” to a darker stop-motion “Pinocchio,” but none are more sorely missed by fans than the final sequel in his unfinished trilogy of “Hellboy” films.

We know the cast and crew, but outside of a couple pictures, we’ve seen zero footage and have no idea how this film will separate itself from the comics and previous films. And secondly, a question that many film fans probably asked when they heard about the reboot — Why?

According to THR, “Hellboy,” which has only had one official marketing image, has been pushed back from the January 11, 2019 release date to April 12, 2019. And regarding that trailer, we might be in luck next week at New York Comic-Con.

Most people were just initially annoyed that Guillermo Del Toro wasn’t going to get to close his trilogy up. From the controversial blackface in D.W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation,” to a very white Natalie Wood playing the Puerto Rican Maria in “West Side Story.” My two infamous examples of whitewashing would be the casting of legendary Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunoshi in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Rooney wore makeup and a prosthetic mouthpiece in his blatantly racist portrayal of Audrey Hepburn‘s arrogant and bitter Japanese neighbor.

While many have been sad Guillermo del Toro won’t helm this new film or have Ron Perlman as the lead, there are also fans who are happy that they’re making any “Hellboy” movie at all. Either way you look at it, audiences will be getting a new “Hellboy,” and it seems like this version is going to be pretty different than what’s been done previously.
