You’ve heard of single-setting thrillers, “127 Hours,” “Buried,” etc., but “On A Wing And A Prayer,” a new Prime Video film, is a bit of a twist on the genre and centers on a family on a vacation flight that turns deadly when the pilot has a heart attack and dies and the husband, a sort-of recreational flier who has a little bit of basic flying training, is tasked with safely landing the plane and rescuing his family from danger.

If the first episode of the new “Stand” CBS All Access mini-series was designed to ease viewers into this global pandemic world based on Stephen King‘s epic terrifying novel, the next one, “Pocket Savior,” didn’t get that same memo. Doubling down on the flashbacks, societal collapse, and character introductions, this second episode puts the pedal to the floor. And for those that felt like episode one didn’t go hard enough with the post-apocalyptic energy, this one has all the empty streets, roving rape gangs, and public masturbation talk anyone could hope for.

A sprawling post-apocalyptic epic about the flu-immune survivors of a deadly pandemic, and the figureheads of good and evil that draw these characters into opposing camps, the series spans several months, the full breadth of the United States, and contends with heady questions about the human condition and man’s struggle to define itself as either builders or destroyers.

If you know anything about the folks here at The Playlist, it’s that we love to highlight indie films that really excite us, especially those that tend to fly under the radar of the typical film watcher. And last year, one of those films (and one of my personal favorites) was “Donnybrook” by filmmaker Tim Sutton. It’s a film that struck a chord with me in a way that ensures I’ll check out anything the director works on from here on, including the project he’s currently filming, “The Last Son of Isaac LeMay.”
