It’s mid-month and like clockwork, the Criterion Collection has unveiled its November release schedule — another slate of classics the tastemaking company can be proud of.

The first release is one we didn’t see coming. When we spoke to Criterion’s Jon Mulvaney last year, he did tell us about a twelve-picture deal with IFC Films, but at the time, Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist” was not expected to be among the releases. That’s obviously changed and the psychological, cabin-in-the-woods horror starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe hits DVD release on November 9.

Secure in your masculinity this week? We hope so. With the thick-necked “The Expendables” in theaters this weekend, we thought we’d do an about face with the opposite: talk to Edgar Wright about musicals.
Here’s Edgar himself in his own words.
———————————————————————–
I find it funny that musicals are considered a guilty pleasure by some film fans and dismissed outright by others. There’s definitely a feeling that contemporary audiences will not accept the form onscreen anymore, as evidenced by some fairly idiotic people leaving “Sweeney Todd” in disgust when Johnny Depp dared to sing out.It seems a shame that so many film fans write off the genre as Broadway camp as there are so many musicals stretching back over 80 years that define cinema in its purest form.

Ok, we just invented a new weekly feature on the spot that will run every Friday [ed. yeah, right, don’t bank on it] called “Four For Friday” (super creative, right?)

The gist is this: We pick four random soundtracks and we pick one song from each of them to highlight for the day. Cool? Cool.

So today we’ve chosen Beck’s cover of Bowie’s “Diamond Dogs,” a song he produced with Timbaland for the “Moulin Rouge” soundtrack (a collaboration people hoped would yield more than one measly cover song).
