With the film industry-at-large firmly focused on the Great White North and the first festival of the fall season– the Toronto International Film Festival– thoughts drift to new trailers and one-sheets coming out from those highly anticipated awards-seeking heavy hitters, not on the dismal pickins at the multiplex this weekend. Maybe TIFF weekend will become like the Februaries and Augusts of years past… a dumping ground for subpar movies. We suggest you check out “The American” (which we kind of loved) or “Machete” from last weekend (which, well, some of us loved…), or spend the weekend glued to your computer, constantly refreshing TrailerAddict.

Long Awaited Doc ‘Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)?’ Finally Picked Up By Lorber Films

Premiering way back in 2006 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival and then dropping off the map, “Who is Harry Nilsson (and Why is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)?” is a music documentary we’ve long been anticipating and now we’ll finally get to see it. The film has finally been acquired, with Lorber Films picking up the rights to the film.

Directed by John Scheinfeld, the film provides the overview of the immensely talented and still undersung singer/songwriter.

As DVD sales have dipped, and those numbers have been further crunched by the weakening economy, classic films on DVD, already a stepchild for studio’s home video divisions, have pretty much been left to wither or, in the case of Warner Bros., go to master tape dumped, overpriced, burn-on-demand releases that leave you forking over $20 for a DVD-R. In many cases, few films released on VHS are available on DVD, and even more films never released on any format float in the ether.

Four For Friday – Troubleman, Amateur, Midnight Cowboy, Devil’s Rejects,

It’s that time of the week again: Four For Friday. Four random soundtracks and one song chosen from each (with exceptions of course).

First up was Marvin Gaye’s foray into the world of blaxploitation scoring for the 1972 film, “Troubleman.” Everyone was doing it (Issac Hayes for “Shaft,” Curtis Mayfield for “Superfly,” a then-unknown Earth Wind & Fire performing the director-written music for “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song” ) so why not get in on the then in-vogue trend (he beat James Brown’s “Black Caesar” score by a year).
