In nearly 20 years, thanks to the fickle nature of the film industry, projects that have fallen apart and an unwillingness on his part to compromise the work, Romanek has only made two feature films, the psychological thriller, “One Hour Photo” (2002), the first film to cast the beloved comedian Robin Williams as a sociopath, and the melancholy sci-fi romance “Never Let Me Go,” from writer Alex Garland.

“You know what NAACP means, don’t you?”

Damn, this is why the Playlist is in desperate need of a DVD column — consider this an open call for those that are interested — somehow Hal Ashby’s excellent and underseen 1970 debut film, “The Landlord” was finally issued on DVD and no one told us about it (and we honestly don’t remember the usual suspects Jeff Wells or David Kehr writing about it, though yes, we may have missed it).

Alright, Gus Van Sant’s “Restless” has now become an untitled project. We’ll see how long that lasts. Remember when Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg” became untitled and now all of a sudden Focus Films is calling it by its original title?

Don’t count it out yet. Meanwhile, the adolescent teen drama/ love story — which as we noted might be a strange, but good project for Van Sant as it’s also a bit of a dark comedy and features a weird ghost — that stars Mia Wasikowska, has finalized it’s casting which is good, because it starts filming today.

Remember Martin Starr’s recent “announcement” (random talk in an interview) that he was writing a script with Charlyne Yi based on uncomfortable party experiences in L.A.?

In an interview with this guy, Starr says the film will have a familiar Hal Ashby vibe.

“We still haven’t worked out a lot of the details, but it’s basically a story about platonic love, the friendship between a young man and an old, decrepit woman…It definitely has a familiar [Harold and Maude-Like] tone to it, and well, oddly enough, it’s set in the ‘70s.

Kanye West has teamed with Comedy Central for a project that is unfortunatley called, “hip-hop meets the Muppets.” A half-hour pilot has been shot for the project, tentatively titled “Alligator Boots.” God, day by day, West grows more StuffThatWhitePeopleLike. Soon he’s just going to dress like Carlton and look like Michael Jackson. [THR]
