Will Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” be the movie of the summer? To claim that title, Gerwig’s latest needs to fend off Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” at the box office on its opening weekend. But “Barbie” has something “Oppenheimer” doesn’t: a soundtrack flush with pop music’s biggest stars; so, the smart money is on “Barbie” in this bout.

Rolling Stone announced the “Barbie” soundtrack today over Instagram (see below), and, as one may have guessed, the list of artists on it is impressive.

Well before the release of “Licorice Pizza,” the close relationship between filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson and rock band Haim is well-documented. The director has helmed a number of the band’s music videos and has gone on record with how close he is with the Haim family. Another day, another Paul Thomas Anderson-directed music video for Haim. At this point, the three sisters in the band really should induct Anderson as an honorary sister. It appears that his influence continues to play a large part in the band’s image, at least in recent years, as he has helmed a variety of their music videos.

The latest Haim/Anderson collab is for the music video for “Hallelujah.” Unlike the other videos and songs that the group partnered with Anderson for, “Hallelujah” is a much more calm affair, emphasizing the emotions of the song over flashy locales.

The terrific group has found a superfan in the director, who has helmed the short film “Valentine’s Day” and the music videos for “Right Now” and “Little Of Your Love” for the band. Now Anderson is back with yet another video for Haim in the live version of “Night So Long.”

We don’t need to tell you it’s great, with a pretty clever and simple concept that’s pulled off wonderfully (just watch it).

We’re continuing to wait patiently for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s new, untitled movie in which Daniel Day-Lewis makes suits or whatever, but until then the director has threaded together a treat. Earlier this year he teamed up with the excellent Haim, directing their video for “Right Now,” and putting together a full short film, “Valentine.” The short screened briefly in 35mm at select cinemas during the summer, but now it’s here for all to see and it’s pure magic.

Paul Thomas Anderson is currently in production on his latest film, a re-team with Daniel Day-Lewis on a drama set in the fashion world in the 1950s, so we figured we wouldn’t hear much from him anytime soon. But suddenly, this morning, a new music video dropped from the awesome band Haim — their first new music in several years — and it’s Anderson that’s directed the clip (which was shot last November).
